Has anyone ever considered using a small citrus tree in there run or near it for shade?
Mine are in large pots and shaping them into a bonsai. I periodically prune some branches. I've noticed they grow like weeds with fresh chicken poop on top of the soil.
If I had a large run I would have put those fruit trees in there for shade and fruit for the chickens. Well they'll probably eat all the flowers. Ah well.
I used recycled plastic cups, when I grew some. I did orange, lemon, avocado, plum, and peach.
