Depending on location/the set up/other factors birds may not only use the coop for roosting though. I've had to lock my flock inside twice due to flooding, since the coop is elevated, and during snowy weather some birds don't want to come out. Technically speaking adding 6' in one direction or another would provide enough space for 12 birds, however keep in mind that integration favors having more than minimum space, so you may or may not have some difficulty when it comes to adding the birds to the coop.
