    Very possible and even likely. Sometimes, the smaller the unit, the more vulnerable it is to ambient temperature swings. I even insulate the top of my cabinets to slow the effects of room temperature changes. This is likely the cause of your lower hatch rates.

    The placement is fine. I recommend a different thermometer. As good as an aquarium thermometer may be, they are only required to be within 2F but can be off by more than that. Likewise, the incubator setting can be way off. They should always be calibrated. I have 3 great thermometer suggestions...
