Don’t know if anyone will see this, but yesterday we got our first baby! Two more eggs are with mamma and four earlier ones that are growing are in the incubator. Hoping mamma stays long enough with the eggs so we don’t have to move. Both are in a pen inside the house so it will be easier to...
Ok I *think* we found some eggs with life in them! We candled 10 of the 15 and found 2 where we could see veins and one had movement! So then we panicked and put them all back 😂. We took video and you can just about make out veins in one, and kind of see movement in the other if you use your...
Yes, I think that’s what we’ll do. I’ll give it a little longer, try and see if we can’t actually successfully candle something, but if not then we’ll get them in the incubator.
I’m pretty sure she’s 100% broody. Only ever off the nest once a day, and is desperate to get back on the eggs as soon as she’s eaten. She seems very dedicated!
Oh he’s mating all right, he’s after them all day long, and quite often he’s successful - we have one with a saddle, and the others are getting there. It’s the killing the chicks that would stop me, so I’ll wait until there’s no doubt. Thanks again!
Thank you - we’ll try again tomorrow. My son shone from all sides and this was the clearest we could get. My vision is not the best on a good day, so put me in a dark room looking at something small and glowing and trying to take pics of it is not the best 😂
I don’t think I’m brave enough for that 😂. These are all from four different hens so I’m wondering what could be happening. I feel terrible for my broody, she’s been there 27 days now,
Ok, thank you - we’ll give it a little longer as we don’t know how long they’ve been there. If they haven’t been developing does that mean they weren't fertilized in the first place?
Oh dear - we can’t seem to see veins in any of them so far, but will try candling others in the basement for comparison tomorrow. I’m actually beginning to wonder if our guy is fertile, though we thought some of our non-incubated eggs had the bullseye when we opened them. Thanks for your help!
Here goes - we went into the basement where it was very dark. I honestly can’t make much out - hoping a more experienced eye can! These are all the same egg as this morning’s with the big air sac.
Oh yes, that’s exactly what happened when we tried to relocate her - when she got off the nest she flew up onto a shelf and tried desperately to go back to the coop, so we put her and the eggs back (though she kicked that first lot out after a few days). I managed to get a better photo of one of...
Thank you - yes the pics are awful 😂. We’ll try again tomorrow and see if I can do a better job, at least with what we think are late ones so we have an idea. She’s really flattened out and seems to be managing ok, and my son put the late ones in the middle so they’d stay warmest, but I don’t...
I’m actually not sure you can see anything very well in the pics. Can’t see blood vessels anywhere ever, so I’m not at all sure. Sorry, we’re 100% new to this!
Here are some pics we just tried to take - we found what we think are late, mid and early/infertile. Apologies for the quality of the pics, it’s not easy 😂
Oh yes, I get very paranoid about dropping the eggs so my son does all the handling / candling! It's very icy here right now too which does not help matters. There was one day I picked her up and she had tucked an egg under her wing which then fell, and I've refused to touch any since 😂. Luckily...
Yes thank you - I had been hesitant to candle as I didn't want to disturb her and things kept going wrong, but we will candle later today and try to take pics, though we've struggled with that. At least they are all numbered now! Getting an incubator today and will set it all up. I had...
