Okay so we are 10 weeks now and I know, I know... But after today, there are still two birds I am watching for roosterishness.
There were several interesting behavior things I noticed as well, but I wondered if the main (secondary sex characteristic) could be how they are holding their tails...
Lol Before we got chickens, you know how everyone wants to tell you that story of how they got chickens from the pullet bin, and they ended up getting ALL ROOSTERS? I figured we might accidentally end up with maybe ONE. Lol what are the chances we actually got 100% pullets from a TSC pullet bin? 🤷
Hahah That's cool! Once I have the space, I want to do something similar. I actually want to try one of those sex link projects where you keep for laying (or sell) the girl chicks, and raise the males for meat. I've been learning about all sorts of different breed combinations that can be used...
That's a huge difference! That's what has me questioning though too, because only one of my girls really looks like your sister pullet there, with a super clean beak. I definitely wouldn't *mind* ending up with a rooster, but I know it could all just be within the range of normal girl chicken...
Okay, cool! I know you can't go by behavior, but I had to laugh, I just saw another chest-bump interaction from this one last time I was out there with them. 😅 I will be on the edge of my seat waiting for the crow or the egg with this one! Haha
Okay, thanks! No worries. That's the most developed of our crew right now, and the face looks noticably redder than the others in person, but I will hold off passing judgement in case SHE'S just ahead of the gang... 😄
It was a little tough to capture the level of wattle development or red / pinkness I'm seeing, but I tried! This is the bird I initially started the post about... (Now at 5 weeks tomorrow)
Well, game on! I heard a distinctly different noise today from the brooder, a, "Cuck-a!". Lol <<face palm>> Not quite sure who it came from, but my money's on the first chick, or the last chick pictured.
This chick has the least white on her face aka "Blackie3" and a little more prominent comb coming in, but it's hard to say if it's just because of the contrast with the black on her face.
Oh, great to hear! That is really reassuring. Not that we wouldn't enjoy having more baby chicks in our future... :) I suppose time will tell. These girls came from Hoover's, but our Welsummers came from Cackle!
Wow! That is impressive!
Yes, in my fantasy flock, I could easily order five each and add 25 birds. Meanwhile in stupid reality, my coop is not that big.... Yet. :D
So all the pics I originally posted are of the same bird. To compare, here is the one I have no question is a pullet. (The other three may have slight combs, but not as pronounced as the first.)
That's really interesting! I'll have to check out that hatchery too. Mostly I've been looking at cackle and ideal, as well as my pet chicken, which I heard is just a reseller for... Meyer? McMurray?
