Hi, I don't know what causes it, but my old RIR's (about 3 years old, I'm guessing, though) lay heavily speckled eggs--sometimes they do wash off, also. But you can barely find a speckle on the eggs laid by my young RIR pullets. Maybe it has to do with age sometimes? Genie
