Has anyone out there recently purchased a sack of Dumor layer pellets that was off color, more whiter looking than normal? If so have you had any chickens suddenly get weak and die? About a month ago I bought 2 sacks of layer pellets from Tractor Supply. The first sack I opened and poured in the...

I had already disposed of her before I realized that the others might have a problem. The other 2 girls seem to be doing ok for now.

Hello Everyone, I need help with a health issue. This morning I found one of my girls near dead in one of my pens. On checking her I found her abdomen to be swollen and tight. I checked her vent for a stuck egg but didn't find anything in there nor could I find anything else wrong with her...

I made it through the weather high and mostly dry, but in the past have been flooded by hurricane surges. What I do to clean up is... Open the wet walls and wash them out, VENTILATE VENTILATE VENTILATE, when the walls & stud have dried, vacuum off all the areas that had been wet, may have a...

Cool deal! Every morning our zapper is chock full of mosquitoes and needs to be cleaned. Last night was an especially good one. Another mosquito couldn't have reached those grids if it was on a death wish mission. Of course my girls loved the bountiful harvest.

I have discovered a new source of supplemental protein for my chickens. I live out in the country and mosquito abatement is our area is pretty much a joke. Lately the mosquitoes have been horrible so I bought a Stinger bug zapper. Every morning the grids are caked full of mosquitoes and a some...

Kimmy, I'm not sure what the problem you are having with maggots is, but here is a thought. It is possible that what you are seeing making holes is not maggots at all, but instead they could be Botfly larvae. They make a nasty oozing hole in the skin with a maggot like worm inside it. My cats...

I am looking to re-home a Buckeye rooster. I would like to see him go to a good home instead of a stew pot. He is about 1 year old, a good breeder, not overly friendly, but not terribly aggressive either. He just needs a bigger space and more ladies to court. He has 9 girls now and they are...

MY babies are 4 weeks old today Things were starting to look a little tight in the brooder pen so I decided to place it on the 6 x 8 run. Now they have a 3 level condo / tractor. When I first built this set up last year it sort of reminded me of a cruise ship. (frequent cruiser...

I usually keep the babies inside our house in the tote till they are 2 weeks old, then they go to the outside brooder where they have more space yet can still be kept warm and allowed some time on the ground.

Pics of some of the chicks. The hen from Jeff Lay is the darker one with the previously mentioned saddle. As you can see she is a lot darker than the hatchery chicks.

I try to only hatch in the spring/early summer when the weather is warm enough to move the babies from the tote inside, to the outside brooder pen. It also helps that the babies will be full grown when cold weather comes in the fall. Here is a pic of my outside brooder pen. I can lock...

Yes she is,but she is a beautiful dark color, much darker than the hatchery birds. The roo Buddy Boy thinks that she is a beauty too... He has 9 hens and she appears to be his favorite. I had to put a saddle on her because she was getting a bald spot on her back. All of the other girls are not...
