Kimmy, I'm not sure what the problem you are having with maggots is, but here is a thought. It is possible that what you are seeing making holes is not maggots at all, but instead they could be Botfly larvae. They make a nasty oozing hole in the skin with a maggot like worm inside it. My cats...

I usually keep the babies inside our house in the tote till they are 2 weeks old, then they go to the outside brooder where they have more space yet can still be kept warm and allowed some time on the ground.

Pics of some of the chicks. The hen from Jeff Lay is the darker one with the previously mentioned saddle. As you can see she is a lot darker than the hatchery chicks.
