"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

That's so funny. They realize they can't stop chicken math. Lol!! I bet he tells you to sell some when they get bigger. Pam

I already cut my flock in half with the hens that went to TD. Everything left is under 8 weeks, so they don't count. When people ask how many chickens I have, I say 8 (instead of 40 and hatching!). :lau :lau

Yeah, my SIL Clint was asking about the 24 babies in the storeroom. Am I keeping them ALL? Then Aimee told him about the 30+ I have in the incubator.

I am only keeping the white rocks but I have a bunch of mixes. Coronation Sussex and white rock and super blue egg layer and white rock. I also hatched 8 Black Australorps. Hatchery probably. I noticed the difference when I ordered white rocks from a breeder I didn't know and got black rocks (2 pullets) and they are 1/3 smaller than my good white rock hens. But with the white rock rooster they make great babies. They will be barred.

I try to only hatch in the spring/early summer when the weather is warm enough to move the babies from the tote inside, to the outside brooder pen. It also helps that the babies will be full grown when cold weather comes in the fall. Here is a pic of my outside brooder pen.

I can lock them inside the house at night or if the weather isn't agreeable and there is a light inside for heat if needed. The removable floor of the house is half inch hardware cloth with an insect screen insert underneath to keep out mosquitoes at night. The insect screen also catches the droppings that fall through the hardware cloth, You can also place a piece of cardboard on top of the screen to block airflow when you are trying to keep the house warm. When they outgrow this pen, I have a 6X8 run, which you can see in the background behind the chain link pen. The smaller brooder pen sits right on top of the larger run and becomes a multi-level chicken tractor.

Yes she is,but she is a beautiful dark color, much darker than the hatchery birds. The roo Buddy Boy thinks that she is a beauty too... He has 9 hens and she appears to be his favorite. I had to put a saddle on her because she was getting a bald spot on her back. All of the other girls are not having that problem.

They have got to be extremely jealous.

:love it!! I'm so jealous. I have a really nice brooder now (thanks TD!) but I wasn't expecting these babies to hatch, so I hadn't cleaned it yet. And then of course today was cool and damp, so it was taking forever to dry. The cat carrier was just the transport. :)

I usually keep the babies inside our house in the tote till they are 2 weeks old, then they go to the outside brooder where they have more space yet can still be kept warm and allowed some time on the ground.
