Do you have a fishing net? I catch my chickens with a fishing net. You do have to be careful to catch them on the first try though, once they realize what's up, they are great at finding a tree or bush to hide in where the net can't reach.
You might try only putting food in the dog kennel. He...
I actually love our shelter belt, but you are right, it would be better if it were 10 feet farther north of the house. This wind was awful, a lot of the drifting is just because of the buildings, we've never had drifts in these places before.
You can see just the tip of the chicken coop peeking out from behind this 9 foot drift. You also can just see the top of the clothesline pole, which is how I know the drift is about 9 feet tall. You also can see kid tracks 😂
I walked around this drift rather than shoveling through it
Pretty much what @WthrLady said. Deep bedding, heated water (heats to 35F, just above freezing), no drafts.
The no drafts thing is super important. I usually keep my roosters in a separate pen from my hens, but their building is thin walls and drafty. It's so cold, their water heater couldn't...
All is well here too. No major flooding in my direct area.
Finally melted enough snow so that the chickens can go out into their fenced in yard, rather than running around my yard. They love to scratch and dustbathe in the flowerbeds and make such a mess scattering the woodchips everywhere. I...
I got Salmon Faverolles for myself and BBS Ameraucanas for my friend. No real pictures of the Ameraucanas because I gave them to my friend straight out of the incubator, but here are a few pictures of my broody Blondie continuing to be a fantastic mama (this is the second batch of chicks she...
Speaking of wandering fowl... did I tell you, I am GUINEA FREE! I liked them, but they were "one more thing" too many. They wandered a half mile radius around our place.
Well, sort of guinea free. We found about 2 dozen guinea eggs in a nest tonight. And my chicks are hatching. What should...
Anyone want guinea keets? Within the next 3 weeks, we are going to be overrun with keets (unless the predators get smarter than they have been...) York/Seward/Columbus area

Anyone interested in guinea eggs? I currently have more than I know what to do with. As soon as they figure out I am taking them from the nest and move to a new location, problem will be solved, but for now I can't eat that many and I don't need more guineas.
Near York here.
I have a bunch of eggs I started in the incubator this week. We shall see how they do. So far, I am beginning to really appreciate broody hens.
Sure, contact me and I will see what I can do. I will not be able to guarantee they all are from Buckeye hens though, as all of the hens are in the same pen. Some hens lay distinctive eggs that I can sort out, but not all of them.
Ugh, I know it! I was reading some of the duck threads on...
Hi Nebraska!
I stop by BYC from time to time but I don't think I have ever greeted everyone in this thread.
I'm from near York.
I have 14 guineas (mostly lavendar, a few pearls), 5 Barnevelder, 8 Buckeye, and 1 Delaware hens, and 2 Buckeye roos.
What brings me to BYC this time is...
