There is a webinar coming up next week on High Pathogenic Avian Influenza. It's free and being put on by Cornell Cooperative Extension. Here is a link to more information, thru my county FB page.
Once a bird is exposed to one of several respiratory viruses, they become carriers for life. Stress will cause symptoms of that disease to emerge. The person you got them from may not be aware that the birds were carriers. I almost never buy adult birds for this reason.
Hi, everyone, We finally fired up the incubator this week to start our spring hatching. It's my family's favorite thing to do. We made the incubator out of a mini frig and put a window in the front. For the next 3 weeks, our kids will have their noses pressed against the glass, waiting for hatch...
Welcome to the thread! We have speckled Sussex chicks too, but ours are bantams. We have some Cochin eggs in the incubator, so we will see if any of them hatch out. How do you like your speckled Sussex?
Tonight, when I did my final check on the coop, I saw that almost all the chicks that had been sick 5 days ago, we're sitting on the perches for the first time. The exceptions were my 8-week-old BC Marans roo, who is always on the perch, and a Marans Pullet. They were on the floor under the heat...
The chicks look much better this morning. I gave more probiotics/electrolytes to 3 of them last night, and 3 this morning. But right now, I have seen all of them eat and drink, none are hunched or standing facing the wall. I still have no idea what happened. I didn't see blood in the poop, no...
last night I found a dead chicken in the pen of young birds we put in the coop a week ago. Since it was after.dark, I couldn't tell much about the rest of them. This morning I see that they are listless, heads tucked down, feathers fluffed. Looks like they didn't eat much yesterday. There are no...
Tonight my DD and I took a few chicks to a group home for disabled adults (ARC). A friend of mine is on staff there. Such a wonderful experience for all of us! From the blind man whose face lit up when I put the chick in his hand to the gentleman who is obsessed with chickens and rabbits and...
I just looked it up today as I moved some chicks to a larger brooder...Chicks need about 1/2 square foot of brooder space per chick until 6 weeks of age. That doesn't include space taken up by a waterer or feeder. I give them more than that as they get older or I see too much agitation and...
So, TSC finally got me. They had pullets today. And some of them were light brahmas. Seriously, I was going to buy some from TSC anyway, because they provided a lot of stuff for the 4-H poultry scholarship my daughter just won. We were just waiting for pullets to come in. I am going to have...
Me too! Or even called me at the phone number on the box when it arrived at the distribution center the previous night. Clearly, it was an overdue express mail with live animals. At least one of the two chicks that died would have made it then. It was very close. It's a 45 minute drive to the...
They were shipped priority express, so the seller will get a refund on that. And there were only 8, because they were from a private breeder and that was all she had.
