I don't recommend shifting eggs from two chickens under one unless the hatch dates will be the same. my experience has been that once the first batch hatches the hen will abandon the remaining eggs after only a day or so.
i breed brahmas, darks, blue/gold partridge, lights, all of the above are going into incubator as i just bought the eggs to replace my entire flock to predation. i set 9 lt brahma eggs, but will not have eggs to hatch or chicks to sell till next year.
i hope your power is restored soon, one of the downsides of a heat lamp is they only heat as the light contacts the area illuminated or the chicks themselves...hopefully there is enough heat in the surrounding materials so it slowly releases and keeps them from getting chilled. its one of the...
the only fully fenced run that i would trust my chooks in would be double fenced eith cattle panels or other heavy duty fencing with 1/2" hardware cloth covering everything creating a good safety barrier, including overhead and floor, otherwise i close them in at night
where in the northcountry are you located....the only auction that i know of is the auction in schylerville, sat. eves. starts @7pm, livestock part of auction @9pm, hope thats a help.
I agree, if there will ever be a time to get promises of getting what you want in the future, its bargaining time now, take advantage of the opportunity.
I think you mentioned yesterday that you prob. will not keep all the turkeys, if you deside to part with some of the bronze, i might be interested when and if you deside...BTW if you want more eggs to try to hatch, just PM me.
as far as how long to leave hatched chicks in the bator before moving to a brooder, they can do fine up to two days after hatch, the only reason i remove them is they soil the remaining eggs and can sometimes annoy the poor chicks that are pipping and zipping. if you have to open the bator...
in the archives of BYC there is an article "chooks chicks cheat sheet" that really does a great job of explaining how to put eggs thru lockdown in a styro bator, she does a better job of explaining than i could ever do. I highly recommend reading it. good luck with the hatch.
I would move a couple of those broodies into walmart storage tubs without lids or into spackle type (home depot) buckets with half lids on thier sides to open up some nest space for the girls still laying
my recommendation is an R-COM, I can't recommend them enough, to my knowledge they are the only bator that actually adjusts the humidity, all others just monitor it and you have to adjust the humidity. My hatch rates are great. They are expensive but worth every penny.
i don't count days either, i make a general note as to approx when they should hatch so i am prepared with space for them to brood, but if any egg hasn't hatched a week after its approx due date its trashes.
