Today one of my golden comets laid her first egg. She's 26 weeks old. THe strange thing is it was another golden comet who laid the first egg at 16 weeks so I'm not sure breed of chicken makes a difference ????
Anyway, she was so proud of herself she just had to run outside the coop and crow...
We put our pullets on laying mash at around 14 weeks I think. The first pullet started laying at 16 weeks. By the way, she did not have a comb hardly at all on top of her head so I don't know what that has to do with maturity ???
Congratulations! I have one light brahma who has not laid yet. She is 20 1/2 weeks old. They must be late bloomers. She's the biggest hen I own too. My husband had a talk with her and told her she was slacking since the tiniest bird (golden comet) was the first to lay at 16 weeks.
Since I last posted we have more hens laying. We're getting seven eggs a day. We have 12 birds. This morning two of the eggs we broke open for breakfast were double yolkers! I can't believe it. We have all 6 of the golden comets laying now and one RIR.
