Your first picture does look like a hen (white) The twin Buffs (1 and 2) both look like boys due to the thin golden saddle feathers I see near their rear end. VERY nice comb on your white cockerel!
Hi Mike,
As @Folly's place mentioned, we have a few young birds, not chicks at this time. We have hatching eggs and can ship chicks in the spring. We are NPIP. Where are you located?
Candy
thank you :) He is huge, weighs about 9 lbs. We have three white hens and two buff hens.
Our three pure whites hens. They are nice sized too, about 7 lbs each:
The hen on the far left below is a Chantecler/Ameraucana mix...she lays blue green eggs but has a cushion comb. Being in...
no problem :) The combs on the birds look to be single combs, so if they are Chanteclers, they are mixed and not purebred. We have whites and buffs. They are supposed to have cushion combs like this: This our white Chantecler rooster Walter
The two pics at the end look like Chantecler chicks, but the two on the top look like Production Reds. Chanteclers have cushion combs. Chicks need to be protected until they are about 16 weeks old and grow all their adult feathers. You should be able to tell the sex of the birds at around 20...
that sounds nice! I never tried misting my Chante's so I am not sure how they would take to having water. I have heard of some people putting fans in the run, but really I just let nature take it's course and let them decide how best to cool off.
I know they hated flying out of the run and...
Right, I totally agree. It was me thinking that way---of course...with very little knowledge of chicken genetics . Hmm...our two buffs have more "pepper" on their tails. I guess we will just have to see what the babies feather out like.
thanks Tara!! great info, but now my head is spinning...! I thought it was as easy as getting an all white male and putting him over my white hens and getting....um....white?
So it sounds like White Chanteclers can be both Dominate and Recessive white? This will be VERY interesting...
Ok then...
We hatched out nine chanteclers with our all white Walter cockerel and three all white hens and we have two buff hens.
Two of the chicks have tiny little black dots on head and back chick down. Is that normal? :) I know they didn't get into the ink well LOL
Or.....is it...
Mary, I have heard that white Chanties are both, but belong in the category of white recessive most of the time. So if they are cross bred, other colors will pop out not white. Our whites will produce whites, so if your broody hatched a white/white Chantie egg it should be a white chante. But...
Here is our Chantecler baby that was hatched on Leap Day :) Not sure if a boy or a girl, but has the sweetest personality :). Taking a nap on me under the fuzzy blanket.
Our last single incubator egg hatched early this am...a beautiful pure Chante! Not sure if it's white or buff, I am thinking its a white though. First progeny of Walter. The chick has a sweet face so I am hoping a girl!
