I agree about not wanting his genetics here, also not so happy with a couple of his hatchmates, for other reasons. Not having a good experience with our small group of Chanties. Two hens have damaged hocks, not typical injuries here, One hen is a miserable biting wretch when she's in a nest...
No fertile eggs, he's been unwell for a while, and hindsight is a wonderful thing; he wasn't breeding as enthusiastically as normal for a few weeks.
I have ten TSC 'pullets' of various breed types, all a month old, and at this point wouldn't mind if one or two turned into nice cockerels, just...
I do try to keep two Chantie boys and two EE bantam boys, but this time there was just too much drama, and the 'spares' had to move on elsewhere. :barnie

It's been a while since I've posted, and didn't have any chicks this spring. Sadly, my only Chantie rooster, two years old, died today, after being ill for about a week. He's at the MSU path lab for a necropsy, I really want to know what's wrong. :hit
Nobody else is ill, not respiratory...
Ted, your birds are beautiful!
I'm debating , hatch some eggs here, or order some chicks, or wait till next year. And I'm worried about our postal service, getting any by mail.

So true! We have a Chantie rooster, one year old, and will keep at least one of these new cockerels, I like to keep them as long as possible, to pick the one to add to the flock.
Our Cackle whites have integrated very well with the flock, including bantams.

i have ten white Chanties from Cackle, hatched May22, and am starting to pick out the cockerels. Too soon to be sure about the group though. I'd like to keep maybe one cockerel, and three or four pullets.

Unlike two of our Chantie roosters, who insisted on holding on to the edge of the black rubber water dish, and lost toes. Both died due to complications of this behavior. One may have learned from the other, but still not smart. And the only two birds we've ever had who did this!
Now there's...
I have two broody hens right now, and no eggs that I want hatched. It figures, when I want chicks, nobody will be interested...
And my May cockerel, who's been physically mature for a while, is FINALLY producing a decent crow. He still is submissive to our adult bantam rooster, who has been...
FINALLY have six (all I could order!) Cackle white Chantie chicks! Just got them, and some Buckeyes and BLRWs settled in their brooder. All look good right now. May there be some Chantie pullets, and one nice cockerel in the group!
Mary
This year we are down to one rooster, who has lost toes on his right foot, and is apparently now infertile, and six hens, all two years old or older. So I've been trying to get more from Cackle. Sadly, our second Cackle order, including ten Chanties, all arrived dead, thanks to some jerk while...
A 20% all flock feed is good for all ages, and a separate dish of oyster shell is for actively laying hens. Your youngsters don't need the excess calcium or the lower protein in a layer type feed.

Chicks need amprolium medicated feed until two or three weeks after they are on your ground and in your coop, if there's a problem with coccidiosis at your coop. We are feeding it to our chicks this year, because (two years ago) our last batch of chicks did have issues with this parasite.
