Hi PA people, I haven't been on this thread in awhile...I moved my hens back to Long Island with me...loving having them here! Only problem is posts on my local thread are very sporadic...you guys seem to be on here frequently, and I am in awe of your collective experience, so I was hoping for...

Harford Fair is another option if you missed Wayne County. Fond memories! I haven't been in a few years, but there is a website, and under "exhibitors" tab there are some poultry and apiary events. Starts August 18th and runs for five days I think.

And I'd never thought of that! That's brilliant!

Never did it myself yet, but mom makes quick work of the freezing by using her electric bread knife.

Not far away, in Moscow/Madison township. Technically my mom has the chickens, but she doesn't "inter web". ;)

Wow! Beautiful! Is he always that erect, or is he strutting his stuff for the camera?

Yes, great resource, it helped us pick ours too. I will say that the girls all came through fine, but I did have a few worried moments about the ones with bigger combs on the subzero nights. The Wyndottes and Easter egger (with the least combs) had no issues, the others a few specks that might...

Great to meet you! I live out of state (until I retire anyway), so my chickens started life in the suburbs, then got relocated to mom's place out your way. We're out there a lot of weekends, and much of the summer, so maybe I'll see you at the Hamlin Tractor Supply Company or the Moscow agway.

Hi, and welcome! We're in the very bottom of Lackawanna county (Madison Township near Moscow) but used to live near the upper region of the county. It's actually colder where we are now, at higher elevation. I only recently got a flock going myself. We've got six different cold-hardy breeds and...

Nice to see the discussion of other (crazy?) people spending the bucks or creative energy at least on chicken surveillance and comfort. If I totaled up the "cost" of the chickens vs. the cash I've spent to make their lives and mine a bit easier, people who don't "get" the chicken thing would...

Wanted to quickly chime in... Love the Dane pups!!! May have another one way sooner than I ever expected... Our Ivan, only 5, having serious limitations with an enlarged heart already. Heartbreaking... Back a few pages on the thread there was a discussion about new coops from old sheds...

Hi All, Just spotted (ha ha puny) the beautiful Harlequin Dane pics, and hadn't realized do many chick people are Dane people too. We currently have Ivan, our fourth Dane, and a whopping 190 lean pounds. He's about to turn five, and has just started having cardiomyopathy. We're crushed, and...

Hi Penn People., A bit more than a month back I was trying to pair some lonely outdated but perfectly serviceable microscopes with some new homes here. It's finally happening, and some are now boxed up and ready to ship. I tried to PM all the PM's I received, but some people who were interested...

Hi People, I lurk more than post these days, but I wanted to put this out there...one of the deadliest E. coli outbreaks ever was from unpasteurized apple cider...seems deer feces is a big problem; if fallen apples or apples mouthed by deer get in the batch, they multiply like crazy on the sugar...

I used some thing like Bird X netting, actually a very strong fine mesh designed to go over whole fruit trees... Is 14 feet wide, so less splicing of sections. As someone pointed out though, I've not yet used it in snow. A 14x75 piece was about 20 bucks I think.

I used bird netting over my run...it keeps them in and birds of prey out...but not much use for other predators. It's the kind for putting over fruit trees, was 14x45 feet long(!) and not expensive.

Love the chickens! We have one SS and she is really sweet. I love watching how she seems to be speckled with more and more snowflakes every day...she is shaping up to be our lowest ranking girl...I hope she will be ok when we try to integrate these 4 with our 3 one year olds in a few weeks. And...

I hear you about the Mosquitos. Out here in my Long Island place the local Mosquitos are being replaced by Asian Tiger Mosquitos. I don't think any regular mosquito has gotten me all summer... These guys are vicious... They move fast, like flies, and are Out All Day, Thicker in the woods but I...

Regarding the ordinance...is anyone grandfathered in??? What if the chickens are housed within an existing over-6 foot structure like a barn? And no free ranging on a ten acre plot? Sheesh....seems like they've gotten so specific in their rules it's going to backfire...

For Jethro, My Jersey Giants seem very quiet compared to my other breeds, but there are only two of them so maybe it's just a personality thing. I'm curious to see if my latest pullets will sing any egg songs... Our other chickens do not at all! Maybe it's because they come inside from...
