I don't think that I have reached out you folks yet, but us chicken friends could use some help. We are facing an 80% reduction in people who can legally have chickens in Michigan. We had the best protection in the nation, but now we are facing a major change in the rules that allow chickens and...
Beekeeping can be frustrating. My hives survived the winter only to die suddenly in late spring.
I got lucky and found local nucs to rebuild from, but they were very expensive.
Don't give up hope yet, there is still a lot of time left to build a strong colony that can over-winter.
Not to argue, but you can get honey during the first year. I harvested 30 pounds of spring honey before mid-June this year. It came from 2 hives that started as 5-frame nucs from hive-reared queens. As hot and dry as it has been here in SE Michigan, my bees are thriving and producing like crazy...
There was a link on the Michigan thread about this little trick...
Fill up zip style baggies about halfway, add a few pennies and hang up the bags here and there.

I would still be concerned about the Cooper's Hawk. One got one of my hens about 6 weeks ago. It couldn't fly away with the larger bird after the kill, but came back several times to feed on the carcass.
BTW, I'm from Huntingdon originally. Are any of you around Raystown Lake or thereabouts?
Just a question, but is is the centre part an aisle? If so 2 feet seems kind of narrow to maneuver through. If you widened it to 4 feet, it would be easily to move through for cleaning and whatnot. And it was give you the same square footage as the other 4 rooms (in case you added another breed)

They let me in and I'm a MichiGANDER.
PA is home though and I miss it. Love lebanon bologna, the good kind is hard to find out here and no one has even heard of scrapple.
My hen house is a part of my garage on a cement floor. It is covered with both fine and coarse pine shavings, deep cover method. I also add a scoop of DE and PDZ. The outdoor coop is one of those tent garages on an dirt floor that is covered with straw and a scoop of DE and PDZ.
They get raked...
