Day 11. By this stage the developing bird is very obviously a chick. You'll also be able to see the tiny egg tooth' (used to chip through the shell at hatching time) developing on the beak. Only ten days to go!!!
There is high blood flow in a chickens combs. They use that too cool the blood hence cooling them. The black is most likely blood flushing to cool off.

There are three neighbors in my valley with roosters, plus mine. They have a crowing contest every day, all day lol. Pretty amazing until it gets annoying.
so one of my chicks is acting weird. it will not lay down. he is so tired. wings are droopy and is always falling asleep standing. he keeps his but in the air all the time. did notice if i hold him he will lay down. any ideas?
