OK, it's been suggested that we change our forum name to a more soap-opera theme.
Here are my suggestions:
Chickens Of Our Lives
As the Rooster Crows
As the Chicken Clucks
Jersey Giant Shore
General Coop-ital
All My Chickens
The Crowers and the Cluckers
One Egg To Lay
Make of them what you...
argh, bummer! The set I got my hubby has sleeves and a collar (not like the overall type). I bit my tongue and paid over $100 for it, but we've both gotten way more use out of it than I would have thought. It's a good thing he and I are close to the same size!
MarkAustin!
I didn't go to Yates either. I'll have my hands plenty full with the ones I'm getting in a couple of weeks. That, and DH would probably kill me. HEChicken--one of the best investments I've ever made was to get DH a full coverall set of Carhartts. They're WAY worth it!!
dang, Ritter! How come she thinks she can run YOUR operation? (if you do sell out, I might be interested in the D*** hutch!) Hugs to you ya and I hope tomorrow's better!
I've also heard that Gatorade in a bird's drinking water helps solve the runs!
Theresa, if you're interested in those rabbit cages, let me know. If the owner will give you more info, I can go pick them up for you and bring them when we get our chickens (since Hillsboro is just down the road from me!)
Don't stop looking, Ivy! You'll find the perfect place! I don't think we'll ever be completely off the grid, but the previous owners did set this place up to be mostly self sustainable. Our major heat source is wood. (You can see our furnace at my blog, address below--look for the post "got...
no solar panels YET, but our house is built for passive solar heating, and we have cold frames and the hoophouses. For right now, I'm concentrating on building up my soil using my chicken addiction, LOL. Solar is going to be hubby's department!
He doesn't have to enforce the leash law. He has to enforce state law. Here's a useful FAQ: http://resources.lawinfo.com/en/Legal-FAQs/pet-law/kansas/index.html Check out the bit about dangerous dogs and/or killing chickens. Hope this helps--just because he's a greenie doesn't mean he's got...
oh man, Hawkeye! Of course, except for the loose dogs, fighting, and buried house, it kinda sounds like us! And Kansas law does state that any dog that harasses livestock can be killed on sight.
Danz, feel better soon. I know pretty much how you feel--I've had walking pneumonia twice now...
Danz, that's just TOO CUTE!!!
Hawkeye, google Yokohama chicken. They're one of the long tail breeds. Or, check out the thread on here about most handsome rooster--Maki may not be show quality, but he sure is nifty. He's on my blog too--look for the post A Dream Come True.
Patricia, you bet it's cold! I've been trotting out to the coop about every hour with fresh water and collecting eggs. Still, even with an unheated open front coop, my boy Stewie (and the rest of the flock) are having NO frostbite issues. YAY!!!
Honeycreek,
Is there anyone in Central Kansas that's interested in going in on a mobile (shareable) chicken processing unit? I met a guy that's good at building the equipment for cheap!
Karen S! I'm really looking forward to seeing what you come up with I'll be mixing batches too, from 3 different sources, and adding them to my existing flock when they get big enough to look out for themselves. One piece of advice (since I used to breed parakeets for color)--remember that...
Here ya go, pics of the hoophouses (both covered and uncovered) and my cold frames up near the house. The hoops are just cattle panels bent over and covered with heavy plastic sheeting. I haven't started running chickens in them yet, but plan to this spring/summer. Smaller wire around the...
@Ivy--It shouldn't be all that costly. What I plan on doing is building plywood bins (with lids) down the middle of my hoophouse. I heard about doing it that way from Harvey Ussery's book "The Small Scale Poultry Flock." The biggest thing would be keeping them cool enough in summer, but I'm...
