@JazzyChicks I am an hour west of you, used to live in Ellis too. Orschelns in Hays has chicks. I am getting ready to set 48 barnyard mixes next week, I come to hays all the time and could sell you some straight run cheap if you were interested. I don't have room for them all. I am pretty...
"I'd say that was still way high. I have never hatched at over 58%"
A lot of the reading on the subject I have done disagrees with you. I am really happy with this hatch so far, 5 out of 8 eggs on my first try ever, and taking into account they were shipped eggs......I am pretty happy with...
We have 3 chicks, all fully hatched within an hour of each other this morning.! A 4th egg is pipped. We did a quick candle of the non pipped and I think 3 out of the remaining 4 look dead. We will give them a couple more days and see what we get though!
Noisy little things. I'll grab some...
Its hatch day! We have the first pip just starting.....I am impatient so I am glad my cows are calving like crazy today, keep me busy so I leave the eggs alone. All 8 Exchequer leghorn eggs made it to lockdown, I had had problems getting my humidity above 75% so hopefully that is high enough...
I live in the heart of rattlesnake country. We kill 50+ a summer in and around where we work live and play. I'll leave all the garter snakes I can, and I welcome bull snakes too, but I'll probably be relocating them now away from my Chickens as they will eat chickens and eggs.
Progress on the coop! Since I took this picture I have the door framed out and trimmed, and am putting the last row of pallets on the wall. I have all my tin found and tore off old buildings to tin up the outside, some glass found to make some windows, and will leave ventilation in the top...
Talked to my dad tonight, we have some neighbors back home that keeps a neglected free range barnyard flock. Not going to go there on how he keeps his chickens, but he did offer me as many hatching eggs as I want, just stop by and collect them from the hen house. He has more than he can eat so...
Yep, there is a ton of money behind the anti GMO and organic movement. So much propaganda.....and it works. Conventional farmers like me have such a long ways to go to figure out how to get people to trust modern agriculture again.
Is it a bob quite quail? If so its illegal to keep those without a game bird permit I think. I'm going to get some quail this summer but I don't have any yet. :(
Candled the eggs tonight, this is the end of Day 5.
6 of the 8 have visible embryos! The other two have veining and darkening, but we couldn't make out exactly what was going on. One of those two was the one with a detached air cell.
I am kinda pumped! I know we are a long ways away and...
Scottish Highlands are awesome! I could never justify owning one from a commercial standpoint....but they are cool cattle. I would think they would need some good shade in the summers in Kansas. Do you breed her? If so what with?
They are here! Had 4 dead out of 28, but that doesn't surprise me with the cold front. If they would have gotten here yesterday we would have been golden.
Cozy in the brooder, all have drank and most are eating. Here we go!
Yes I know that if we get half to hatch that will be awesome, I am honestly hoping for at least 2, but who knows. I'll probably have 6 hatch and they will all be roosters LOL. Its an impulse buy so if I get zero, I get zero and we try again later.
