Color is light enough to be a pullet, but the large legs say cockerel. If that is barring in the tail feathers??, ....I would bet cockerel................stan
I know it might be obvious to a lot of you, but I thought I had a cock bird that developed that 'brassiness' . Some one suggested that I wash him! Turns out that he was just dirty, and I live in sandy Fla where we don't have any clay in the soil. Was also mentioned that being free ranging in the...
Sue, there are a lot of breeders that do not like to have people, espically strangers from Craig'slist shopping , wandering around in their chicken yard. Bio-security and theft prevention come to mind as reasons...... stan
I know exactly how you feel!! My Dels are the fartherest away from quality in my birds, but it would be hard to decide to let them go before any of my 'quality' breeds. Quality like beauty is indeed in the eye of the beholder.....stan
Wish I had kept enough to choose for tails and legs. Just sold too many chicks. By the time I got around to selecting my keepers, most of the better ones were gone. Lesson learned, pick mine FIRST!!
Pinched tail is not a desirable trait, but most Dels have them. The pullets I selected for next year's breeding have pretty open tails. You want them to be kind of tee- pee like when seen from behind. ......stan
Roosters will have barring, or stripes in their tail when they get a little older, pullets will have solid feathers in their tail and wings. .........stan
I think he too. I see only barring, no solid black feathers on the wings or tail. Does have girly legs though! The comb and wattles can fool you . You'll know for sure in a couple of weeks ......stan
You have Whitmore (?) birds don't you? Seems like I saw a pic or 2 of your birds and they were very nice looking. You should hatch some extras to share!! ......stan
Kathy, are these more of your 'project' birds, or are you still hatching from your orginial Dels? You're in what, F4 now?? I'm going to shoot for that many per hatch this fall.......stan
It's hard to get consistent results in breeding Dels, and pinched tails seems to be a common problem so I started there, trying to add open tails to a decent typey body. Have to work on color now and getting the type 'set' so I can produce them regularly instead of 1 in 20. .........stan
They are around 4 months old Cindy, I'm not positive, I had rolling hatches going on with other breeds in there too and did these as an after thought. They are from the same breeding as your birds. These are the only 2 I have kept so far, and I intend to replace 2 of the hens with these. I'll...
Got a few pics today of the pullets I'm planning to breed this fall. I am trying to get the type first, then work on tails. I think I have good type and tails on these, but I'm losing color?? Would appreciate opinions, thanks, ...stan
Cindy, Your selections should be based on your birds present type and what needs improved the most. I like the type on a lot of the birds I'm getting in this line. I consider that pretty well set, even though I am still getting a lot that are not as good as I am looking for. I would not breed...
No, I'm not selecting only for tails, or even for tails first. First is over all body shape, then I look at tails as a secondary selection factor. If I have a pullet with a great body type and a pinched tail, she goes. She must have the body type first and an at least decent tail to go forward...
