Anyone use SAND in the run/coop

Yes. I use a decomposed granite and sand mix. The quarries will deliver it or if you have a truck they will put it in bed of truck then you can shovel it off.

Anyone use SAND in the run/coop

I get DG Mix which is decomposed granite and sand. It has tiny pebble particles so I don't need to get grit. It actually is better than just sand. Do not use playground sand or mason sand is right.

Anyone use SAND in the run/coop

Sure you can do that. Not an issue. The sand may have little pebbles which the hens will eat like grit so they can digest their food.

Anyone use SAND in the run/coop

Yes me too. My run is fully covered and tapped on sides. I put shavings on top of sand in run in winter. I love the sand so easy to keep clean and the poop dries up immediately.

Anyone use SAND in the run/coop

What do you scoop it up with? I replaced my sand 1 year later. Actually just added a little more. If you use something like a kitty litter scoop only bigger the sand will sift through and only the poop will stay and you can throw it in the garden

Anyone use SAND in the run/coop

Great choice. It works great and easy to clean. I would suggest shavings in the nest boxes. You can make a big chicken poop cleaner with a plastic pitch fork and chicken wire small enough for sand to sift through but not the poop then you scoop it up like kitty litter. It works like a charm

Do not use concrete sand or playground sand it's too fine. Call around for decomposed granite and sand mix. Get course dg mix. It has little pebbles in it so you don't have to feed grit then.

Anyone use SAND in the run/coop

Yes me too love the dg mix method. I have my coop within a large enclosure for protection. I put the dg mix inside the coop except nesting boxes and also use it in the enclosure. I clean it daily and it's fast and easy. The best. It dries the poop quickly and I just pick it up with a kitty...

Anyone use SAND in the run/coop

If your chicks are separated from your hens you don't need to use it. If they are together you can but not a lot of it. I use a plastic cup and fill it half full and that's good for the coop and run. Doesn't take that much.

No age limit. Take a cup and sprinkle it in the coop including the nest boxes as well as the run. You don't have to mix it into the bedding the chickens will do that. Also sprinkle some in their food as well. Make sure it's food grade. This helps in preventing parasites inside and out. You...

Anyone use SAND in the run/coop

Oh I use pdz for my horse but I use food grade diatomaceous earth in my coop and enclosure and there is no smell plus it keeps flies away. It's great to put on your chickens too for fleas, mites and any other pest control. I sprinkle it on their food as well. I've never had a problem.
