The layer mash is for her. I have a chick feeder filled with chick starter mash for the babies.
The problem was that she was feeding her layer mash to the chicks...BUT, it looks like she's also eating some today.
I put a small plastic beach bucket toy full of layer mash within her reach. She's picking up beakfulls, crumbling it more, and dropping it for the chicks. She definitely has all the food she needs if she's willing to eat.
Does anyone out there have experience with mother hens who refuse to eat???
Calling Speckled Hen! Calling Speckled Hen!!
Your wisdom is needed!!!!!! :-)
THANKS!!!
So here's my question of the day. At what point do I start worrying about momma. She absolutely WILL NOT eat. She hasn't eaten for days. I give her food, and all she does is break it up and give it to the chicks. She won't even swallow one bit of it.
She's lost so much wait...

....SO.........if I come trick-or treating at your house Preservation Acres, do I get a chick?
Looks like Melbourne is a natural. I love seeing the momma with her babies. So cool.
How did the rest of the hatch go?
Hey, come over, and you're guaranteed your pick of the "litter!"
We had only one dud egg. I candled it, and it hadn't even started to develop.
I'm thinking about saving it to make an omelet for my old boss. :-)
From my best guess, we have 3 australorps, 4 RIR's, and and 4 BO's. Some look pure and others are slight mixes. One of the 3 australorps has...
Cleaning out the "brooder" AGAIN!!!! The quail waterer I bought for them very easily tips to one side and leaks out water a little at a time.
Anyway, here's everyone hanging out on a beach towel while I clean up.
Here's Mom teaching her babies that it's safe to take food from my hand.
WOW!!!!! What a following! lol
This has been SOOOOOOOOOOO much fun! We won't be able to keep the chicks because we're living in town right now and the city limits us to 8 hens...but...I do only have 5 hens. :-)
We'll keep them until they're feathered out and then sell them. I'll probably...
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
9 hatched, 2 pipping, 1 possible dud.
The parents were austarlorps, RIRs, and BO's. It looks like we have 2 australorps, 2 RIR's and a ton of BO's.
I love this!!!!!!!!!
Oh, my DW brought my digital camera to her classroom and keeps forgetting to bring it back. GRRRRRRRRRR....gotta love her.
She swears she'll bring it home tomorrow.
Day 20...
My GOODNESS!!!! I leave for a few hours, and everyone in Michigan checks in! :-)
4 PIPS!!!! And all kinds of peeping going on.
My hen is so excited. Every time they start chirping, she stands up and looks down between her legs to see what's going on.
When I first got home there...
OK, so if I section off part of the chicken run just for them and buy one of these things, fill the bottom with wood shavings, would that work?

Do you have a sheltered area outside where she and the chicks could stay apart from the flock? like an extra part of the coop? barn stall? shed, etc?
I think it would be okay to keep them inside for a few days, but she will be able to do just fine with them outside, as long as they are...
