That's a real bummer on the loss of your bird. Here, winters go to -35 below F routinely and we don't go above freezing for a few months in a row. One of the reasons I chose ameraucanas was because they have 'winter' faces and are very cold hardy. Hope you can figure out what happened.

Judges have way over looked this fact in the past at NEPC for the Juniors. Not good if you ask me. I'll be looking this weekend to see if they do it again.
