Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Jean, do you know where I could find a copy of the standard for BW Ameraucana... besides the APA SOP book?

(Which is currently en route in the mail...

According to my latest SOP, Dq's for Ameraucanas are "Presence of ear tuffs, absence of beard and muffs."

So I am assuming off color, includeing the legs, are faults, not dq's.

I would hope not, or that they at least change it! Every Ameraucana breeder knows one of the biggest red alerts for an Easter Egger is having green or yellow legs, so it naturally should be disqualified. Same goes for things like Brahmas. Almost all hatchery Brahmas are depressingly underweight and have a LOT of pencilling on their backs. Guess what? Both those traits are an automatic DQ. You'd think they would catch on to the EE thing too, since so many EE's are entered into shows and sadly don't get DQ'ed.

I guess that would be up to the Ameracana Breed Club.

I did quote word for word what the dq's were. In the individual varieties it states when the shank color should be, but its not listed under dq's.

Having green legs is an idicator of yellow skin which would be a foreign color to that described for breed or variety or specimen lacking in breed characteristics.

Pages 32-34 of the SOP has DQ's listed which apply to all birds. There is no copy online that I know of.

Jean,

Judges have way over looked this fact in the past at NEPC for the Juniors. Not good if you ask me. I'll be looking this weekend to see if they do it again.

The best thing to do is make sure whoever is clerking say something to them and that they have the SOP available if the judge is not familiar with them. Alot of judges nowadays don't want to DQ the kids because the don't want to discourage them from getting into poultry. You could do a mini informative seminar about ameraucanas if they let you before or after judging.

ETA: Do you know who is judging?
