Just went out to feed my chickens and as usual the buckeyes were the ones first at my feet and trying to get out the gate. I have had to put them in the large covered run lately because of a red fox and hawks that have attacked and killed 3 of my hens and one rooster. I know the buckeyes are...

Just wondering..... We were processing our extra roosters of orps/marans today and wondering about the buckeyes and processing. I hope to have some to process next year since I have what seems to be 3 roosters and 3 hens from what I have hatched. Are they a bigger bird than the orps to freeze...

I turned my buckeyes out of their A-frame into the big run that is covered because of hawks and owls. They are so different from other breeds. They come running when I go into the pen. I let most all the chickens out to forage a few days but the hawks got one for two different days of my...

I let my Buckeyes out of the A-frame coop this week to free range for the first time. In the coop they were very skidish always, when out into the big run they follow me everywhere. Funny though, they don't go out of the big run much. I am sure they will but now they are still sticking close to...

Is one way of telling sex of chick when they get black in the tail feathers? Of my 6 buckeye chicks, 4 have a black feather in the tail, 3 have redder combs with the other coming long, feet are larger I guess. I had first thought 3 and 3 but now think 4 and 2 in favor of the roosters, darn!

Thanks Tander! They are doing well, just not happy I have them cooped up right now, but I will let them out when the blueberries are gone and then they can forage to hearts content. Just want to make sure I am home when they are out because I don't want to lose any of them.

I have finally made a picture of my 6 buckeyes. They are 6 weeks old and seem to be doing well (not all got into the picture). I think there are 2 males and 4 females but not positive, could be 3 and 3. I guess it is a little early to tell for sure. I have them double protected by having a...

I am a little late posting but hatch was not too bad but not excellent. I got 7 buckeyes form 24 shipped eggs and as of now they are doing really well. They are two weeks old now and pretty lively. Hopefully I can keep all them healthy and have my beginning of my buckeye flock.

That explains why some are doing better than others. They have a small house with 12x12 run outside. Some are foraging with hen and some are not allowed by hen.Guess I will remove hen if it keeps up. I will try adding other foods.

cgmccary, thanks for the reply. I lost another today with it and have been kept busy trying to stay ahead of the problem. I had added my 19 chicks with a broody and her 6 in an outside pen with a heatlamp so not as accessible as normal. I was trying to get ready to have room in the house for my...

I am just waiting on some Buckseyes to hatch this weekend but have 24 chicks of other breeds to hatch this past weekend. I had gotten the 30% protein feed for the Buckeyes and have been feeding it to the new peeps. Question, does the higher protein cause more pasty but?. Seems like most every...

Beautiful birds, I want some Buckeyes! I curse that old raccoon often for killing my start for last year. Not had any problems lately since we redid our pens with covers/roofs/nets.

Well, my good intentions of starting my own Buckeye flock have gone away. While DH and I were away a week for his son's wedding, something broke into the pen and got the beginnings of my flock of Buckeyes, lavendar orps, black orps, and a few other odds and ends. Can't decide what to do now...

I have hatched my first buckeyes. I have 3 from Matt John and 2 from another BYC breeder. I am surprised at the difference in color of the chicks. They are growing and developing well. Hopefully there will be enough to mature and have my beginning with the buckeye breed. I keep up with this...

I have just hatched my first 3 buckeyes. Not a good percentage but they were shipped eggs and we never know how they are treated in transport. Surely there will be rooster and hen to come from these three. lol I do have 8 more eggs in the bator for a couple weeks from now but the electricity...
