Sorry to hear about your chick. Probably just an isolated incident. I don't think Araucanas are any more fragile than other breeds. I've only had 2 "failure to thrive" chicks die out of 100 hatched.

He's definitely NOT an Araucana. I think I'm seeing feathers on his legs? If so that would rule out Ameraucana, also the yellow legs (if I'm seeing that correctly). I think he's an Easter egger.
Just had a bumper crop of chicks hatch! My mottled Araucana pullet hatched 4 out of 6 eggs on Friday. Yesterday, my incubator clutch of 14 started to hatch. So far 12 have hatched and another one is pipped.
I gave the hen 2 of the incubator chicks last night, and will have to give her a couple...
Here are 5 of the 10 chicks from my latest hatch.
Also a few random pics I took today. The white pullet is my fall show prospect from my first hatch this spring.
They are from my own stock. This is my second year breeding. I have black and mottled, blue/splash, BBR, golden duckwing and white.
I bought out long time breeder/exhibitor Nancy Utterback's large fowl stock last spring. She decided to downsize and keep only bantams.
@willchickeneat does this 5 week old cockerel look BBR or golden duckwing to you? He has genetics for both in his background. His father is recessive white and I'm test breeding him to see what color he really is. Mother to both this chick and his recessive white father is BBR.
Ten of the twelve eggs that made it to lockdown hatched yesterday! That's the best hatch rate I've had in an incubator yet. I'm trying to mimic broody hatching as much as possible, and did not use my automatic egg turner this time. I did it by hand every 12 hours. I also turned off the bator...
Absolutely, 100% agree with this!!! Mixing colors is another pet peeve of mine, and another good reason to keep separate pens.
Curious, are your duckwings from Lanae Cash? I know she is in CA and raises beautiful duckwing Araucanas.
Another side effect of Edd's birds (low vigor). A few...
No doubt shipped eggs make hatching more difficult, but I think Araucanas are more sensitive to artificial incubation than other breeds. I have a 46% hatch rate using an incubator, and an 88% hatch rate using broody hens (same breeding pairs/trios).
It's a recessive gene rearing its ugly head. That's good you cull the tailed ones. Edd doesn't breed towards the Standard. His chicks are often off colored and have sloppy combs, and also known to have fertility problems due to short backs.
At least you had the foresight to mark them!
I also can't see the difference between those two and a black breasted red hen (non-wheaten based) for that matter. Even Googling images does me no good.
