Has he told you why only RIRs? You could always go with "they were sold to me as RIRs... They must have mixed them up...." Just thinking out loud here - don't mind the crazy in the corner....

I managed to get up to 6 dozen eggs in the fridge. Once. I lasted for all of one day. I am currently getting about 10 eggs a day and struggle to keep more than a dozen and a half in the fridge at any one time. Does that mean I need more chickens?

    ALABAMA!!

I can't say with any certainty that they do. I have heard of some people feeding their chicks 26% gamebird starter as it saved them buying two different types of starter. The chicks seemed to be bigger at 3 or 4 weeks than most other chicks of that breed and also seemed to be better feathered...

I get a 22% layer for about $12.50 for 50 lbs. The same store also carries a 16% layer for $10.50 for 50 lbs, if I recall correctly. But that is in the Birmingham area. Layer feed at my local TSC starts around $17. Not sure how far you are willing to travel for your feed, but G&D Farms in...

Hmmmm.... I have a number of kids socks that have been out-grown.... what type of rooster do you have and what size sock did you use?
  10. apteryx

    ALABAMA!!

No, it is not like a bark collar. The collar prevents roosters expelling the contents of their air sacs all at once, preventing them from unleashing a full-powered crow. They might still crow, but it will be less loud.

Ha! Started with 4 a little over a year ago. That will be plenty we said.... Currently at 33, down fom a peak of 50 earlier this year. In a month or so that will drop again we the roo-heavy hatch (8/11) gets big enough. Unless anyone is interested in some very nice barred rock or speckled sussex...

That last line has me intrigued... It also reminds me of my fathers approach to pest control. He has had to replace sections of gutter due to his decision to use a shotgun to shoot a possum that was hanging off of it.

I have 8 light brown layers. 4 I can still pick out by egg shape and slight variation in color. The other 4 are a little more difficult. I think 3 of them lay 1 egg a day between them.

Are you also looking for more color in the egg basket? Something like this:

    ALABAMA!!

Definitely RIRs and buff orps at Thrasher in Bessemer. I am pretty sure that they don't have a minimum. If I didn't have chicks in the brooder and an incubator full of eggs I am sure my girls would have talked me into getting some to go with the feed yesterday. I also got my marans and legbar...

Feel free! I currently use it as a grow out and transition pen. The dimensions were driven by the wire I had on hand at the time. For the cladding I cut the pickets in half lengthwise. I also made the roof out of pickets. The covered part can be shut off from the run, and can be accessed by...
