ALABAMA!!

hey Orps
I was reading on another site and they said you may have to wait till they are older to tell like you did, and then they said crowing and so on can be a way to tell. Does it matter that at almost 3 months all they do is chirp? When should they start to crow? I know egg laying won't be for awhile.
Sorry to bother you I am just antsy about knowing.

After we ate Meanie, I'm really eyeing the other hens that aren't earning their keep

Little cockerels are one thing, but slow cooked hen is another entirely.

Meanie wasn't a tough choice to kill, I was doing her a favor.. poor thing was so fat (always chasing off the young birds so she could gorge herself).. and mean. Not a social bird at all. She didn't fit into the flock. And ofcourse I found out she wasn't even laying anymore.

I've killed enough of them now that I am confident in my 'skills'. It still sucks.. I am attached to a few that I couldn't kill, because I love those birds, but some of the others are a pain in the behind

Speaking of which. I still got some birds up for sale. Atleast 1 barred rock, she'd be a good free ranger (as in, she's climbing on top of the coop). She's very friendly toward people, chatty.. opinionated

She's a hoot, but I prefer chickens that aren't TOO friendly. I'd be willing to part with a second barred rock and possibly 1-2 Jersey Giant/Australorps. All started laying about a month and a half ago. I've got two little Australorp/Marans chicks, 6 weeks old.

I've got 6 dozen eggs in the fridge, we eat half a dozen a day.... that tells me I have too many chickens

I managed to get up to 6 dozen eggs in the fridge. Once. I lasted for all of one day. I am currently getting about 10 eggs a day and struggle to keep more than a dozen and a half in the fridge at any one time. Does that mean I need more chickens?

I'm sure they have started to chirp less and less already. They will start crowing about 4-6 months but I had one that started as early 3 months. I've also heard of some that didn't start crowing until much later. But the few that have the were roos started about 4month. When they start it's not a normal crow. It's a awkward sounding crow and but they get better at it really quickly.

I'm glad you guys are having tons of eggs. I'm kind of jealous. After all my orps were killed off by a predator I no longer had an egg supply. And although I LOVE my silkies and cochins (aka. my eye candies) they are bantams are not good egg producers(NONE of them have even started yet). So I have had to eat store bought eggs this year.

Next year I might break down and get some more English orps. Kimberly....I may be looking for you to hook me up with some.

In all fairness, I get 2-3 dozen eggs from WIC for me and my toddler. I use those first, so my own eggs end up piling up

My new pullets are laying machines though.

I can send a box with Justin tomorrow morning if you'd like some. He gets there a little before 10.

We went and got muscovies from Kimberly yesterday.. Drool worthy property filled with critters! Those orps are lovely looking. Johnathan was highly impressed with all of it.
