Thanks!
I'm about to go out and take some pics of the mottled Javas. I'll be sure to post here. I'm afraid the roo's have some frostbite going on, since they opened their door a few days ago and got locked outside in a storm. Too bad, that means I can't show them again, and have to wait for...
I'm awefully happy to have the ones my grandmother had since the 1930's. All are from the ones she got from her mom when she married. They havn't been outcrossed, they are all very similar in appearence, as happens from a long line of inbreeding. I'll take some pics tomarrow.
Wow, thats very interesting info, saladin. I'm not up on all the background, but I've read some about it here and there. I didn't know what the chickens in the barn even were until about 6 monthes ago.
I'm a woman. LOL
I don't know that I've done much other than just try to improve the birds I inherited. With 4H kids, and a keen interst in quality, there is every reason to selectively breed, and no good reason not to. Are yours good layers? Mine aren't rocking, but I'm working on it.
If you have a McGraw strain, I'd keep it.
I don't know where gram got hers, but they aren't too bad really. The new ones aren't as good overall, but the roos have good size, and everyone has yellow speckle feet, which is ideal. We've got good eyes, and most of the hens have the right 1 of 3...
I'm still working on my Javas too. I bought a flock lately to add to my grandmas flock (she's kept since she married my grandpa in the 1930's) They are mottled Javas.
Everytime I post her, you guys ignore me. Am I now welcome to chat with you???
I have some good links, and you can google it. I have tha APA book in front of me, but thats a lot to retype. Look for square bodies, mottled legs, 5 point combs, and about 25% white feathering. There are other details too of course...
I hope your able to get yourself some Javas soon. I'm sorry nobody is close enough for you to trust their eggs.
I guess If I want to be included, I need to go take pics of my Javas?
They are lovely!
My hens look a lot like yours, but my pullets (only 3 months) have muc more white tipping than the older ones. I'm anxious to see the end result.
Yay! A Java thread!
I just had shipped in an entire mottled Java flock. Its a small flock, 5 girls and 3 roos age 12 months. All arrived in great shape, and are in my barn in cages for a week or so until I've sure of their health. No mixing of new stock with old here.
I also bought...
