My four 6 1/2 week old BJs are quite the little go-getters. They are wary of the grown chickens but they are fast and unafraid. Compared to some 2 week older cream legbars that are scared of their own shadows. Wonder if it's the breed or being raised by a broody hen that makes the difference.
My broody is a Blue Laced Red Wyandotte. I haven't done much hatching so it is hard to compare quietness. And these are the first with a broody. Everything was great till I moved them to the big coop and didn't realize there was a small place where the chickens had dug out under the fence that...
Eleven little Java eggs went to lock down. One wasn't developing properly. Ten little Javas now under my broody. Originally 15 eggs with 4 clear. Pretty good for shipped eggs I would say. Thanks @haTHOR
So sad. Wonder what happens to make it pip below the air cell. I had one pip at wrong end last time and hatched without trouble, much to my surprise. Wonder if it hadn't of been for the blood would it have been able to hatch. What's surprising is that any of them make it out. It's just amazing...
Looking good on Facebook. Never thought I wanted silkies but they are growing on me. I'm up to 6 Javas hatched. Two still unpipped in incubator and one pipped under Anastasia and one unpipped. I think I will put some of the first to hatch under Anastasia tonight. This is her first time to be...
What are you hatching besides Javas? I have a terrible case of chicken math. Good thing I have a small incubator. But if I incubate again it is going to be with a bator with a big window!
Well, maybe you'll find that it pips okay through the bloody area. I'm afraid I'm a little bit of an interventionist. I have an incubator that I can't see through it's just a small one that was cheap. So I have taken peeks but since it is small it regains humidity very quickly. I had no trouble...
Yea for 4 pips! I have three hatched and two more pips. They are really drawing this out. I wonder if egg size effects hatch date. Two of the three that hatched were the smaller eggs.
That's interesting. I don't know if I had of seen blood at the pip site I would have realized it was because it pipped through a vessel. Guess depending on the size of the vessel how he'll do. My last hatch I had one that I was helping. I took a little bit of shell off around the top and...
I was hoping the ones under Anastasia would hatch first. This is her first time and if she did well with the 2 chicks I was going to put them all with her. I have 5 1/2 week olds in the garage brooder and spent all day today building a grow out coop for them. I'll be able to finish it tomorrow...
That weird one that I don't think will hatch is the "barn" egg you found. You sent it upside down. Not complaining but just as a point interest. When I first candled it I thought "no air cell". Then I found it at the other end. So I looked at the egg and sure enough both ends looked pretty much...
I started with 15 shipped, 4 were clear, 2 are under a broody, leaves 9 in incubator. All looking good at lock down but one. It was still moving but development has been weird so I'm not expecting a chick from that one but the rest look good.
