There are silkie breeders that are working on project called satin. This is usually a silkie crosses with a Cochin and selective breed back to silkie over many generations to create a hard feather bird with silkie chicken type and qualities like black skin, crest and beard, 5 toes. You can...
So apparently wood ash in the dusting area is not welcome. Every day between 3-5pm my flock rotate through everyone taking a dust bath but today I added some old wood ash from the camp fire like is recommended to prevent mites. Now they won’t go into the dust bath they sit and stare at it then...
This guy keeps catching my eye. He was marked to sell but I think he will stay as long as he has a good attitude, he’s not 5 months old yet but has developed very fast.
It takes dozens generations and lots of hatching/culling. But basically it is taking you best satins from each hatch and breeding back to you best silkies, goal being to breed out defaults that will come with the Cochin like comb, skin color, number of toes etc and increasing beard, crest, and...
Mine love watermelon when it’s hot. After I chopping it up for the kids i leave a little of the pink flesh on and I put the rine in the freezer and give it to them frozen.
It does appear to be a splash. They usually start out looking white with a blueish gray tint to the fluff, then as feather come in the get the darker blue/black splashes.
Here is a good picture with the different feather types.
I have a little frizzle silkie it’s harder to see the frizzle, their primary feathers are the best way to see on young chicks, frizzled slightly turn up. And next to its hatch mates it looks like someone teased the hair.
Here is a good chart showing the difference. Many times people have very light blues or splash and mis-identify as lavender but lavender when compared to blue is a very light even pastel color.
I agree to 2 blue and 2 splash. What makes you think lavender? Remember lavenders are completely different genetics than blue and take 2 copies of the lavender gene to make a lavender chick, do you have Lavender adults?
Silkies lay light cream colored eggs. There is a breeder Whispering oaks that has the only silkies that lay blue eggs but that is the only time I have ever heard of it.
This is a few of mine Vader is my rooster then we have sprinkles, Gracie, ebony, shadow and pig pen.

We have a few more I don’t have pictures of.
One of my new 5 week old chicks is just mean. I’ve never seen anything like it. I had chicks chest bump and chase each other take food all of that but this chick goes up and grabs another chick not anyone in particular for no reason by the back of the head, wing, or tail whatever until it...
