Mine do not fight, they are too submissive. I originally had six and they were all very submisive to my RIR and BO chicks, always.
I thought perhaps it got started because they were literally low on the pecking order. But my chickens live usually in one big flock of mixed types.
Is this an orloff trait? I have two hens that went through a terrible spell of feather loss and picked at themselves continually. Your idea of confining them alone did work however, because they were broody and didn't think about pecking at themselves for awhile.
I only have two, but they followed that pattern....layed well the first year, even in winter. Went broody second year, not many eggs after that. I like broody though, they were great mothers. A whole flock of them would be too many for me though.
I'm the oddball who got mine on accident, they were sold to me as rhode island reds. BYC enthusiasts identified them for me when I realized they were something else and asked what in the heck were they? They have fit so many of the stereotypes I'm sure that is what they are and the store...
In May they will be two. Last spring they went broody. I waited a couple MONTHS before giving in and giving them eggs. They sat on their nests together and hatched out their chicks together. They still hang out with those chicks even though the pullets are full sized just about now.
They...
My two hens have not layed an egg now in about 7 months. What is up with that? I'd like to get a roo for them but if they are not going to lay eggs what is the point? I'm quite attached to them and don't want to cull them, but I'd better get some eggs from them soon. They hatched chicks for me...
Mine are hatchery-quality, maybe that is why. At one point I had six, and one of the six did not have the proper looking head. I still have that one, so perhaps mine are a mix. The other five however look exactly like the spangled orloffs pictured here, and they also fit several descriptions of...
If you look at different hatchery websites, they say they lay light brown or white eggs. Check this one out:

Here on BYC under breed descriptions it lists them as laying white eggs.
I will say, mine lay a...
I actually would be quite interested, I'm very near Portland, but just invested in some rabbits and supplies so don't have much to spend this month. How much for the cockerel? He would probably fit in better with my situation than an adult roo, as I already have the one who is dominant but not...
Maybe you could sell me some hatching eggs next time one of my hens goes broody and I can hope at least one is a roo? We had kind of a bad experience with shipping chicks so that method does not appeal to me. But eggs would be a different matter. Although right now, I would think an egg would...
I don't suppose there are any russian orloff enthusiasts reading this thread that might have a spangled roo? I have just two hens, but I'd like to breed them and my roo is a Buff Orpington. I originally got my orloffs as a fluke but have come to really like them. If anyone has one in this area...
No, they had been broody for awhile when I gave them the eggs and had not layed any for awhile. The chicks are about three to four months old and they still have not gotten back to laying. Before that, they were laying very well.
Rarefeathers farm on page 23 has orloffs like mine look now. Mine...
I don't have any addresses, but I just wanted to pop in here and say something about my two orloffs.
I got some RO by accident, it was a feedstore mixup and I actually rehomed most of them as they were flying out of my coop's pen. I had two that remained and were low ranking, so they were...
Well the eggs were Buff Orpington in actuality, but my Russian Orloffs successfuly hatched their chicks today! I had two that went broody together. Now they are being moms together.
Are your orloffs low on the totem pole in pecking order? Mine sure are and my BO are very high. I was saying to...
Heh, it is how I got the DH off the couch and out in the yard to build both the chicken coop AND my duck area.
Kind of the opposite of If you build it, they will come.
More like...they are here, better hurry up!
My orloffs can fly really well, so make your fence high or top covered. Or plan...
