A few years back some French beekeepers got blue honey. Seems it came from waste from a biogas factory using M and M waste. Here's the link: http://newsfeed.time.com/2012/10/05/french-bees-produce-blue-honey/

Yeah, I've been stung on right around the rim of my shoes a couple of times because a bee has landed there while I'm in the hive and then I lean forward or take a step and it starts to squish the bee. I usually don't swell at all when I'm stung, but if I'm stung on my ankle or feet then my feet...

Once I was in my backyard wearing a pair of Capri pants. I wasn't working my hives but standing rather near them. One lovely lady decided to land on my pant leg and proceeded to crawl up the inside. Higher and higher she went. I began to panic, anticipating a sharp pain in a rather delicate...

Congrats! Bee-utiful hive. I also love the hive stand idea for holding frames. Enjoy your beekeeping adventure.

I've found that if the hole is in reach of my hose, sticking the hose down the hole and turning on the water for several minutes works well, too.

Congrats and welcome to beekeeping. My best piece of advice is get involved with your local (or even state) beekeeping association. They will be your best resource for help and getting questions answered. You'd be amazed at how friendly and helpful bee people are. Don't get me wrong, this...

Yes, spray the bees not you. I definitely didn't make that clear!

It's best to do it in the middle of the day when most of the foragers are out of the hive. If you have no smoker, you might try spraying with sugar water and wear long sleeves. However, this time of year, they can be testy. So if you could get your hands on a smoker and a jacket that might...

Yes. I highly recommend looking into taking an intro to beekeeping course (many local beekeeping associations offer them in late winter), or at least joining your local beekeeping association. Start attending meetings now if you can. They will be your best source for info on beekeeping in...

Sgtmom52- It's nice to see someone else extracts in their garage! It's the one time of year my garage gets a good thorough cleaning, so my hubby doesn't complain about having to park outside for a couple of days .

The bees will land on the little "porch" and crawl through the gap between the bottom of the lowest hive body and the bottom board. I don't know where you bought your hive, but it does look a little smaller than the typical space. Also, many inner covers have a little dado cut out that you...

Just as preserving things with sugar retards bacterial growth, sugar syrup is sufficiently sugary that it will take several days in very hot weather (in the 90s) before enough mold will grow in it to spoil it. And at that point, the bees will just refuse to take it, it won't hurt them. Cleaning...

My hives are on a mulched area and sit back about 2 1/2 feet from the grass line. We mow (straight across the front) right up to the mulch on a riding mower. They don't seem to care...never been stung doing it. Sometimes, since you are in the flyway, I have a returning bee fly into me. But...

Once a frame is completely capped, you'll find that there aren't very many bees on it. I never had more than thirty frames to harvest at one time. So what I do is just lift out the frame, give it a good shake over the hive so the loose bees fall back in, and then blow off the occasional hanger...

Ooohh.... love those ideas. I forgot to mention that I also have one of those stone fountains.... the kind where you dig a 5 gal bucket into the ground and then lay stones on top. The stones have a hole that a tube fits though and you use an underwater pump to pump the water up and let it...

FYI- the boxes on the bottom that the bees raise brood in are called brood boxes. The boxes on the top where they store only honey are called supers. :) I supply water for my bees because the stream behind my house also dries up in a hot spell and my next door neighbors have a pool I don't...

By "large super" do you mean something your bees are using for storing honey only, or where the brood nest is (which would technically not be a super, but sometimes people call them that). I would not put only 9 frames only down in the brood nest because they will draw it out funny and you...

I have this type of jacket. I prefer it over the other style. I've never been stung through it anywhere, including the head. In other news, one of my hives I keep on a friend's farmette swarmed yesterday and I just happened to be there at the time. Even better news was that it landed very...
