A BEE thread....for those interested in beekeeping.

Hello & welcome! I started with 2 top bars last year. Unfortunately, the NY winter has killed both hives . Not deterred tho' - I will get one hive replaced and then start building a Warre hive, I think that will be better for NY. How's the flooding up your way?

I just checked on my bees - Italians. All dead - long, hard winter . I only had 2 hives, so I think I will replace 1 hive this year and build some Warre hives for next year. I think they'll do better in a Warre hive in NY.

Welcome! This has been a very cold winter - I'm not sure my bees have made it through. I know you will have a great time - I was so excited to be starting my hives last year! I hope Spring arrives soon. Do you have top bar hives or Langstroth? Sue

So, if you can't get to the beekeepers' meetings, turn up on their doorstep (the one down the road). I think you will find that most beekeepers are like chicken people - they love to talk about their 'animals'! He or she would probably be the best source of information for many of your...

Hi there, I wouldn't worry too much about getting a mentor right now. If you can e-mail the local beekeepers and let them know of the problem, they will most likely be able to assign you someone to mentor you. I had similar issues, but went ahead without a mentor. Fingers crossed, I...

Congratulations! you will find them very therapeutic once you get over the initial nervousness! For reading I really recommend 'the thinking beekeeper' by Christy Hemenway. All about organic top bar bee-keeping. Informative, east to follow, also 'honeybee' by C. Marina Marchese. Lots of...

Sounds like you have it well planned! Just make sure those old bee boxes are thoroughly scrubbed and clean just in case. You don't want to inherit foul brood or something equally nasty, Sue

Hello, While I'm not from Tn. I encourage you to start your bees next year! I was quite nervous when I started earlier this year, but it has become almost 2nd nature now and quite therapeutic. The bees won't let you hurry them along! Are you going to go with top bars, Langstroth or...

One thing I forgot to mention is that you probably won't get any honey the 1st year since the bees' have to build up their supply to survive winter, so patience is a must have! Sue

Hi there, I started with 2 top bars this year. I've been stung twice, both times when I was tending to the bees, otherwise they don't bother you. 2 web sites I recommend are biobees.com & goldstarhoneybees.com. There are plans out there for you to build your own hive - which...

Hello everyone, New beekeeper here!! Got my first 2 hives this year - top bars, built them myself. I have 1 hive that's doing very well and the other looks weak. I have started feeding the weak hive in hope that they will survive the winter. There are some awesome...
