TBHs are great for people that use the wax because you have to take the comb an squeeze it to get the honey out so you get the wax too. They are also simpler to build.
The normal box an frame hives are harder to build but produce more honey because the bees are not having to rebuild the comb...

Fencing would not hurt the bees but you would need a full cage to keep the guineas out. They can fly over at least a 30 foot tall fence. I saw mine on top of the house alot an once saw one on my MoonRakers. There over 60 feet in the air.
I have never heard a issue with bees an chickens but I have heard of geunnies (spelling) camping the entrance to the hive an eating every one as the come out.

Yellowjackets can decimate a hive, a club member lost three hives to yellowjackets. Those giant red wasps you're talking about are probably cicada killers, they don't bother honeybees.
I think the only wasps that are bee killers are only native to Japan an China region.....

Less heavy lifting an cheaper is the two that I can think of. I think its more about how you plan to use the bees. If ya want wax then top bars are a bit simpler in the long run but if you want the most honey you can get an not after the wax then the box type is better.
I want them for my apples an Muscidines. May help my garden an hay fields to. Could care less about the honey but could use the wax.
I do have a webcam ready to go in my TBH when I get my hands on some bees.
I remember reading somewhere on the net that a native bird built a straw nest that once abandoned would fill with bees. The nataves started making the nests there selves. The combs hung strait off the straw.
Remember they were dealing with killer bees or a precursor, they destroyed the bees an...

They were using baskets sorta like ya see in the Indiana Jones movie to house bees back then.
The TBH was an invention of the Peace Corp I believe.
Think of a 55 gallon drum on its side cut in half like a trough. Then you cover it with slats that the bees build there own foundations from.
Cheap to build but the bees have to rebuild every time you harvest. Great for simplicity or people that use the wax but not as good for honey...
I hit a wall of bugs like that one time. 13 year bugs, dont remember there name right now. But I had the windshield down in my jeep at the time. If it was bees I would have really been in rough shape.
