Our first little egg at 17 weeks! That's a lot earlier than I expected, LOL. I just installed the nest box last weekend and they haven't totally accepted it in the coop yet. So the egg was, of course, on the floor of the coop. Oh well....I'm happy!

That has definitely been an advantage of have 26 Australorp chicks all at once, lol. Easy to compare them to each other...my fingers are crossed for you too!

Yeah....I figured ;-) I actually ordered one cockeral and I think I only got one! Ordered 25 pullets, 1 cockerel (plus 1 free dark brahma cockerel). 1 chick died from umbilical hernia but all the rest are looking good and very pullet-y. Although there *is* a significant size difference...

Fairly newbie here myself so I'm only hazarding a guess (mine are 8.5 weeks, LOL).....both pullets. But I most definitely defer to the more experienced people on this thread. Here's my suspected cockerel at 7-8 weeks:

That's how I'm looking at it Ronott1.....just for fun! But I'm not in a situation where it REALLY matters (not selling any and no restrictions)...I'm OK with a few mistaken cockerels. Any that are mean (or just plain annoying) will just be sent to the pot!

A couple of my pullets are quite large and also have a comb developing (although not as large or red). The main way I could tell this guy was a cockerel was in comparing the feathering out process....his tail is STILL shorter than all the girls and his wing feathers took FOREVER to come in...

Lucky girl to be out on grass! Ours will be in the coop for another week (to make sure they understand it's home now) before getting outside. One of the disadvantages of the north...

Some pics I got today while moving 7.5 week old chicks to the new coop. Sorry for any blurriness....they are awfully hard to photograph!! Australorp cockerel in the middle there. Although he wasn't the biggest chick for the first few weeks, he's definitely bulking up now... And a good...

We're thinking it's a dark brahma....mainly because of what I call the chipmunk stripes and his feathered legs. And male simply because they're sold out of females as far out as you can find on their calendars, LOL. They're gorgeous birds....but HUGE and I'm not sure how he'll do with my...

Thanks RattlesnakeRidgeWV! They're from Murray hatchery....all supposed to be female with only one male. I did check the box for the free exotic chick but not sure I'll be doing that again in the future. I'm guessing the mystery chick is male (seems logical plus very slow in feathering) and...
