I am not a nutritionist (either human or poultry nutritionist, lol), but I use an omega-3 feed as well, for a couple of different reasons. It is probably better for the chickens since grains (as opposed to pasture and forage) is relatively low in omega-3. But it also has to do with what...
This chicken will not lay white eggs. Chickens with red earlobes like this lay brown eggs (australorps and black sex links combined). Chickens that lay white eggs have white earlobes.
My guess on this one is that she is not yet old enough to be laying, which is why her comb is not red and...
Yes. They share nesting boxes, 2 boxes is enough for even more than 3 hens. They won't use the nesting boxes until they are very close to laying. At 6 months old (25 weeks) you should be getting eggs very soon! If they free range you may even want to check around the yard and make sure they...
Sorta....
Except all of these things are controlled by multiple genes, so it's not a simple dominant/recessive model. And, as others have pointed out, blue/black/splash is controlled by a whole 'nother set of genes yet, as is barring, duckwing patterning, etc. etc. etc.....
Let me try...
What I have had explained to me by someone else is that a bird that is marked like this has dominant white covering the black.
This kind of dominant white inhibits black, but not red. SOOOO... if you have a red chicken (RIR, comet, or buff orpington, all red/yellow color gene family) with...
I think it may depend on where you get them from. I got my first 3 from Meyer, they were very docile. Not exactly friendly per se, but not mean and not flightly. Would eagerly take treats from me.
The new bunch I got at a local feed store, who knows where they came from. They are afraid of...
Interestingly, the BA's I got from Meyer in Sept 2015 recently started laying at 23 weeks. This would seem to point to a possible mix-up also.
With those combs, I'd bet her birds will lay soon! They sure are purdy. :)
This is what my girls looked like at 4.5-5 months. They had just started to get red in the comb a few weeks before (in fact this one is the most developed of the three. Since then I've noticed hey are filling out and getting fluffy!
I got mine from Meyer Hatchery and I've been pleased with...
My girls layed their first egg today! Well, one of them did, lol, I suppose the others didn't really help much. They were born on 9/13/15, so they are 22 1/2 weeks. :)
I accidentally dropped the egg and cracked it, so I had to eat it right away. So yummy!
I'm new to this too, and mine are at just about the same age/development. And, they look about the same too. :) at that age if it was a rooster you'd know for sure! The comb is big but there aren't any rooster feathers.
The songs have been going on at my house for awhile too, but just...
Yay!! that is what I thought. the other day I came home from work late and asked my husband if he'd checked the coop. No. I'm like, what's wrong with you, aren't you excited???!?!?!?! LOL and of course ran out in the dark, lol.
Thanks!
I had tried to post a pic before, I will try again! They have definitely been singing egg-like songs, at least that is what it sounds like to me, I've never heard it in person and they seem to do it a lot! I've noticed one of them squatting too. I'm excited!!
Oh also, so far all...
My babes are 22 weeks old now, and I'm anxiously awaiting my first eggs! From the look of things, I'm guessing it could be any day now, but I'm new to this. What do you think?
Thinking it over, I wonder if it is because I live somewhat near the airport, I suppose chicken instincts aren't developed to know the difference between planes and other big birds. I've never seen any large birds that would pose a threat.
I hear stories of other people's chickens wandering...
Since this thread has been kind of quiet lately, I thought I'd ask a question. My 3 Aussies are now 20 weeks old, and they are the only chickens I've ever had. They spend most of their time in their coop and closed run, but several times a week I let them out of the coop to free range around...
