What's wrong with her comb? It goes pale for a few minutes while she lays but she spends most of her time outside free ranging.

Brown eggs start out darker at the beginning of the lay cycle and then get lighter until molt. Oh! I didn't know that. Neat.

Well, I think the color is a little off in the pic, making the darker one look even darker, but I was a little surprised at the color too. None of my other ones lay that dark. She's got 2 hatch mates that have yet to lay, so we'll see if they all lay dark eggs.

Thank you for the reply! What about the black that looks like it starts on the beak and extends up through her comb? The other two ladies had combs that went from yellow to pink, and the one on the far right- yellow to black. I'm not worried about aesthetics as much as I just want her healthy...

We have 6, but promised 2 of the Black Australorps to a friend. Raised them all from day olds, now it's hard to let any go.

But why does one have a darker face than the other two?
