The world is different than it was 100 years ago. Today, you need a college degree for the lowest paying entry level job. You can no longer "work your way up" like people did in the old days.

I don't know why people have the idea that a child who is homeschooled (or homeschooled in the unschooling style), isn't socialized. My children receive plenty of socialization. They have friends. They talk, they play, they interact. They don't, however, learn the undesirable things...

Maybe, but college admission is very competitive. People who score higher on the SATs are given preferential treatment, scholarships, etc. at better schools.

Suzette! This is all about opinions. Like Potterwatch said - anyone can take the SAT's. You don;t have to have a public school diploma to do so.
Agreed, anyone can take them. The question is what do they score?

Do you have the statistics on that? I am very curious.
Only one. My son. He can dance circles around people when it comes to history - any history. Any era, any event, any fact. People are not all the same. Different people have different needs. If a child is fed what they...

Test scores matter when they are trying to get into college. That is what I would be worried about. The "real world" unfortunately, is about what degree you have. You can't simply show up at corporate headquarters and dazzle them with your life skills.
You really need to be educated...

and if the child's interests are limited to video games and trips to the mall? How does this prepare them for college?
And that is why it only works for highly motivated children and parents. Sadly some families do nothing, and call it unschooling, which isn't exactly kosher.
Ok...

I am just curious about how kids learn calculus and American History by hanging around the house and playing in the garden. How do they learn these things if there is no curriculum?
The concept is that you follow thier interests, now to be quite honest most highschoolers graduate...

how do they move on to high school dual enrollment when they have not been taught basics?
Once you are 16, you can go to your local city college, sign up for the assessment test and enroll as a dual-enrolled student, that is a student who is still in high school, but able to take...

This is not about homeschooling- it is about unschooling.
Unschooling is a type of homeschooling dear. You asked how, I explained.

My question is how many of these unschooled kids are getting into college? How do they manage to do well on the SATs? What kind of careers are they being prepared for?
Many homeschooled kids do dual enrollemnt in high school, that is, they'll take 1-2 classes a semester at the city...

Living proof posted this.
We were not un-schooled, but we were schooled at home as well.
And guess who tends to win the spelling bees, and consistently score much higher then "traditional schoolers"?
home schooling requires a curriculum, testing, meeting state standards, etc...
honestly I think those parents should be arrested. Their children are not being prepared to function in society. By the time these kids realize that they really do need to learn grammar and math, it will be too late.
