We were not un-schooled, but we were schooled at home as well.

And guess who tends to win the spelling bees, and consistently score much higher then "traditional schoolers"?

how does one prepare to not educate one's child?

How many of these kids are getting into college? Their futures are at stake.

home schooling requires a curriculum, testing, meeting state standards, etc.

Unschooling has no structure at all. How do children learn to spell with no one teaching them?

Not sure I understand your question......

I know. I should have made what I said a bit clearer. Sorry.

This scares me. A lot. I like school in the whole structured learning environment idea (less of the obnoxious classmates who could care less idea).
If it were for the sake of keeping kids on the farm where they will learn useful information to inherit the farm, ok. If it's to raise the child to inherit the family business where they will be taught to operate a business, fine. If they are left to their own devices and unattended, heck no.

Some kids need structure to function. Kids with ADD/ADHD have benefited greatly from a very strict schooling and home life. Basic mental stimulation from school offers kids an outlet to grow and expand rather than be sedentary and dim.
This defies nearly all that I learned in Developmental Psych.

I can understand some kinds of freedom and pursuing your own desires but from the interview that woman gave, her kids make me

.

Some kids are bright and can learn just about everything, but they are not the model for every child. Public school may not be the greatest, but neither are all parents as teachers. Find a balance and a compromise, not just one side or the other.

See, this is often the misunderstood part. They are taught, but they are not taught in the classroom setting.
Each and every daily experience is used to teach.
