Some breeders do cull for side sprigs. I think if someone has several nice looking birds in a hatch they'll pick the one without the side sprig to use as their main roo. However, if I had a hatch and the best looking bird had a side sprig I wouldn't necessarily cull it, especially if it was...
They're very curious birds. I think a lot of times that brazen personality is misunderstood as aggressive. I'm not saying that your boys aren't aggressive...but if you think about it, do they act more without fear?
Sorry to say, I almost agree 100% with KYT...I think they're all boys....:hide . Just think of what a pleasant surprise it'll be if were wrong!! LOL Hard to see the wattles in some of the pics though. Yes, if you end up with a Swedish Snow Leopard then hang onto it, or try to find a breeder...
I incubated eggs once myself. I opened up all the eggs that didn't hatch. They were all shrink wrapped, pipped or not. I was out of town..long story...but got back the day they were to start hatching. The humidity was 40%. I was told to increase it so I opened it and added water. Brought it up...
That was my experience this last hatch. I didn't incubate, a friend did. The ones that didn't make it were close to hatching. One had it's beak in the air cell. I was wondering myself if this is common or not.
13 new babies!!! I had a friend set 36 eggs, of which 23 made it past day 7. Of the 10 that didn't hatch, a few weren't fertile (my poor roo needs some assistance :P ). The ones that didn't hatch died very late, one had it's beak in the air cell. So sad! What's the latest any of you have had...
Ya know...I tried hatching them myself once but it didn't go well. It was the first time I incubated them so I'm pretty sure it was me. I sold the incubator. I have asked friends to incubate for me and they have great success. They don't do anything special or different from what they do with...
Today was kind of weird. My horse was standing in his corral chuffing. When I went down to see what it was (I thought mountain lion because he never does this, even with coyotes) all I could see was a huge hawk in a tree. Not the big dead tree that the hawks usually sit in, this one looking...
That's terrible! I hope your neighbor will compensate you the cost of replacing the birds. It's no consolation, but at least it would help and hopefully
teach your neighbor that allowing their dogs to roam free comes with a price.
I only have one SFH roo. BUT, what I did was give my sweet...
My hen broke her leg and it was a clean break. Made it easier for me that I didn't have to try to set it. I didn't do anything for the first three days. I put her in a crate to limit her movement and gave her aspirin to keep the inflammation and swelling down.
On day three I went ahead and...
I've dealt with a broken leg before. The only thing I'd recommend is keeping an eye out for swelling over the next few days. It may swell to the point that the bandage/splint becomes too tight. I gave my hen aspirin (children's, just cut off what I thought a chicken would weigh compared to the...
I have only lost one SFH to a hawk. I had decided to re-home my crested roo since he was getting mean with the others. I went ahead and hatched out some of his offspring. I hadn't separated the crested hens out, so there was one chick hatched out from a crested to crested breeding. She was...
There is no standard of perfection as this is not a breed. Here's a good link for you to check out: http://southernvapoultry.weebly.com/swedish-flower-hens.html
No, it's not an issue. I have only two crested hens and a non crested roo. The rest of my hens are non crested. I free range so prefer the non crested birds.
