With my hens the eggs got bigger when they were well over a year old, like a year and three months to a year and a half. You might give them a few more months.

Give them vitamin B-12 in some form regularly.... some people will give them chopped up liver or other meat. I put infant vitamins in the water until they are about 4 mos old. Just make sure they get extra B-12 and see if crooked toes go away. Let us know what happens.

Yes- I have a couple that lay very light eggs, almost white. And I know for sure they are Swedes.

Chicks from Bulldogma's eggs, hatched 3/1/13: Only hatched 2 out of 7 but I think I've got problems with low humidity. I had to help these two out of the shells- they pipped then nothing happened for hours. It looked like they were being shrink-wrapped in the inner membrane. None of...

I am convinced these birds can suffer from B-12 deficiency, resulting in curled toes and/or paralysis. I put Poly-vi-sol w/out added iron in the youngsters' water until they are four months old, a couple droppers per gallon. Also, probably a good idea to give UNmedicated chick starter, too-...

For me, abundant! Selling a lot, which is helping with feed costs. I have lights on in the coop in the evenings, though. I'd say my Swede girls lay one every other day. It did take mine until they were well over a year old to begin laying large and extra large eggs. The girls a year and...

Do you have a photo of your chocolate Swede? Or her chicks? I'd like to see them- I bet they are pretty. Are they spotted, or solid chocolate?

It is too early to tell what colors and spots this girl will sport when she is full-grown. She may indeed have more mottling later on. My individual chickens went through many different color and pattern variations from chick to adult. She certainly is a very striking blue right now!

Mine were six-seven months when they started laying. Very small eggs at first but they do lay large eggs after they are over a year old. Your hen IS pretty. She does seem to have a split, but if you aren't going to breed her then heck why worry? I'm going to keep some of my lovely girls...

My crested girls have "s" shaped combs. But I'm no good at gender identification in chicks this young.

Thanks for the link! I agree with your take on this issue. Unfortunately for me that means culling most of my Swedish flock and starting over. Right now I have 19 Swedes. All my birds (with the exception of 7 of them that hatched last year from my original stock) came directly from...

Thanks for the feedback, Knock Kneed Hen! Most of my birds have wings like that. Here's Gabriel, my avatar rooster: And Danilo: This mille fleur hen isn't so bad: This girl looks better when her wings are folded up but when you hold the wing out you can see the split...
