Great post! Before I started keeping my chicks on wire for the first few weeks I had problems with large roundworms also. Very gross! Angel, sorry for all your misfortune!!! I had a guided trail riding business in MD and treated my horses with extreme kindness. I also tried to teach people...

Just saw this on the news: http://www.humanesociety.org/news/press_releases/2009/11/ar_horse_rescue_111309.html Very sad. I rode there when researching Arkansas about 4 years ago. Wasn't great treatment of the horses then. Never a big fan of them standing around all day saddled in the heat...

Angel, If they aren't on wire then you have to give them the medicated chick starter feed. The parasites are impossible to avoid if the chicks are in contact with the ground. The chicks die a pretty gruesome death. Keep us posted!!!

Thank you! She started molting about two weeks before Nichole got her so I guess she has a ways to go. thanks again!!!

I think, and maybe I am wrong here, that your occasional high protein treats (like catfood) will speed up the molting process. I wouldn't let her sleep on top of the nest box, that is rude. It is a shame that chickens have to establish a "pecking order" but, like you said, it isn't really...

Urban, Yes, she will look like that. It is a neat sort of coloration, I don't know what it would be called. She's got a big beard which I like and a lot and blue and gold neck feathers. She will come around and be eating out of your hand in no time. Hope she is being nice to her new sisters...

Urban, How is Gladys adjusting? Feel free to change her name of course (FYI)- we named her after the nosey next door neighbor character on Bewitched, Gladys Kravitz. She was always right in the middle of everything in a funny way. Last summer she was laying eggs in the back of our golf cart...

Hi Angel Welcome to the group! Personally I think you should stay in Arkansas. Missouri is too cold! I didn't read your post very carefully but you definitely need a clamp light and at least a 60 watt bulb on them, otherwise you will lose them. There are plenty of remote areas in Arkansas...

Welcome Laura!! I guess I will google red wattle hog. Wondering what attracted you to them? I don't know if you have a scrap yard near you or a friend with horses, but the horse safe fence is much cheaper and then just cover it like I did with inside out plastic bags or a tarp and staple. If...

Since we are talking about coops I will show you our latest, and it is ready for winter. It is a conestoga wagon celebrating those brave pioneer chickens that travelled west so many years ago. If you look closely you can see a tear in the roof and some less than perfect siding where flaming...

Dawn, That is a shame about your pullet. I purchased a pellet (BB type) gun at Walmart for about $80 when I moved here. The neighbors dog used to really make a pest of himself. That definitely kept him on the other side of the road. Lisa

We got to the Fair about 4pm yesterday and all of the chickens, geese, ducks, turkeys were there!!!!!! I opened my arms in the doorway and declared to Phil that this was a wonderful sight! There was a nice selection of good looking birds, really really enjoyed it. I fell in love with a Buttercup...

Mz- congrats on the new chicks!!! Well the chickens don't get to the fair until Tuesday. That was a big disappointment. I guess we showed up for boar goat day because that was the only breed of goat there. We had a nice conversation about alpine goats with a lady that sells goat milk soap. Our...

I moved here from Maryland last year partially to get warmer. It's starting to get chillier here but our house stays magically warm, in the summer when it is hot outside it stays magically cool. I think a lot of the hot/cold thing is mental. There is another thread going on BYC, great places...

Nikki, Think twice about force feeding a chicken anything. It is SO easy to have it go down the "wrong pipe" into their lungs and kill them. If you can get her interested in it by tapping it with your finger (simulating a beak) and making excited chicken noises, that is way better. It won't hurt...

Urban, I had something sort of similiar. It turned out to be botulism and the hen did get better. I am so sorry you are having this problem right away. Try to learn everything you can from this and share it with us. I sincerely doubt you are responsible with your hen house roosts. Chickens are...

Howdy 829 from the Ozarks! What kind of chicks? Here at my house: I have an experiment going on btw. I am crossing my white crested blue polish rooster on my (meat) white cornish rock hens. Problem is he doesn't seem to be very amorous and I am not so sure he is getting the job done. I gave...

Welcome Urban! I am way north-west of you in Hector. Chickens are great!!! You will have a lot of fun with them. They have kept me fascinated since I was a little girl. Phil and I built a chicken tractor of sorts in that it was on wheels. We moved it for the first time about 20 feet away. I...
