I've found the BCM (Black Copper Marans) lay the darkest, though these days my Golden Cuckoo pullets have the GCM girls beat right now. In any case, regardless of the variety you'll find Marans from a private breeder lays darker than the hatchery Marans.
It depends on your ambient humidity. I live in the very dry desert so I set my humidity at 65% for the entire hatch. I get 100% hatch rates using my bird's eggs. I use a GQF Sportsman incubator. You have to take into account your location, as humidity varies, type of incubator, still air or fan...
You'll have to contact the state veterinarian's office to find the closest place for a necropsy. You want to wrap the bird up in 2 bags and put in the refrigerator, do not freeze as that destroys tissues for the necropsy.
Sorry you lost your girl.
I'm so glad you posted this! I ended up in an argument with someone on FB recently that insisted US standards were the same as English, she also wasn't aware of the MCOA or the APA let alone standards. I gave up, some people cannot be convinced.
The Marans of America Club has a chart with egg colors 4 through 9. I punch a little hole in the middle of each color to compare my eggs to the chart. If you go to the club's website you can order a card, I don't think you have to be a member.
I think you're asking about darkest egg layers? The BCMs should lay the darkest. I have Black Coppers, Blue Coppers and Golden Cuckoos, of those, my Black Coppers lay the darkest by far with some of the young hens giving me 8s typically and an occasional 9 by the club's chart. My GCM pullets lay...
I saw the White Mutant listing and had to look at the pictures. I was expecting pink eyes, the whole albino thing going only to be disappointed. Ebay is a great place to go for entertainment purposes as far as hatching eggs go. I also came across an ad not long ago for GCMs but I really couldn't...
Right now most of my girls are on strike! Actually they're going through molt & my roosters look like they lost in a fight. I have a hen going on 6 years old & I still get eggs from her occasionally & they have been fertile. I think a lot depends on genetics, feed, environment & other factors. I...
Nice looking Marans! As far as incubating the eggs, personally, I don't set pullet eggs as they tend to be on the small side. For a successful hatch a developing chick needs room to grow. Also, I place my eggs on a turner in a cool room & don't go more than 5 days after the lay date before...
That is my understanding as well. There is a difference between blue and self blue and other breeds, besides Marans will list colors: Blue; Self Blue; etc.
My Golden Marans, including my rooster, are the only chicken area I allow my grandkids to collect eggs. My grandkids range in age from 2 to 11 and my roo is a gentle giant. The kids know they aren't allowed to open the gates into the Ameraucana. EE, or Orpington areas nor do they want to.
There have been problems with USPS' priority which is why many breeders are now considering using express only. Chilling eggs is not recommended, so you got that right carnivore!
I double box and use newspaper to pad in between the boxes.
