Just an FYI, as I know most of y'all purchase from breeders, but for folks that are just playing with pretty eggs, efowl.com has two sections of marans. The ones with feathered legs they list under "french" marans, clean legs are just marans. In the clean they have BCM and Cuckoo, for French I...
SC got his from trial/error/and good lineage. I got my cuckoos from hatchery, not a feathered shank one. I got my BCM flock from a breeder the birds look workable but the eggs aren't as dark as desired. Darker than my cuckoos but not dark enough. If you have the time @donrae, talk to SC about...
I looked on the Meyer website and they have a few varieties of maran, bUT none like you describe... however, they do carry a Partridge cochin line that has gobs of feathers on their feet.
I just want to share my Polka-dot....I know she's not perfect so far as looks and standards, but if I could breed her personality into every bird, it would be great. She's qwerky and chatty, friendly and calm. I pick her up and I swear she hugs back.
She inspects the garage every day.
I don't know about the avatar, I'm wondering too. However, chickens are weird, genetically speaking. It's not like dog breeding where you try to keep within breed and then mutts are made from mixes. Most chicken breeds are mixes and selected breeding from those mixes until a desired standard...
I think you're right. I've seen it posted the chicken color math, but when folks just buy a bunch of bird there are lots of ocasions where the parent stock is never met, I had to ask about my aracauna because of not knowing the genetic math and not knowing the parent birds.
Yes and no. All will be more apt to be better specimens when purchased from breeders, no matter the breed or color. Most of the time if you want a special color you'll need to find a breeder, or dig yourself a deeper hole into the poultry world. Some breeds are new to the United States and...
This is one of two black copper roos. They aren't really wanting attention from people, will go about their business, do respect people and even small children, but if you must catch them they don't peck or fight too much, jmo.
This is one of five black copper hens, very curious, intelligent...
Here's one of my naughty girls, anytime the gate is left open, she's sure to be found snooping in the garage, lol. She's a black copper, btw. When I go to retrieve her, she's very calm and seems to indulge in affection.
I can say that I'm just a chicken addict. I love love all my breeds for their own reasons. The Marans are very confident, from breeders they have feathered legs, they are dual purpose, and mine are incredibly people savvy even the roos and around kids, the egg colors vary amongst types of marans...
Thank you, thank you, thank you. Production isn't my thing really, my whole manager is built on egg color and freaky feathers, toes, etc. This mix will help out though with the culling of cockerels.
