I am looking for some information that I think I read on this thread. Someone posted that they have been experimenting on early sexing of chicks by holding the chick on its back on their lap. I believe they said after the chick had relaxed and a foot comes up in a defensive position it was a...

We have a couple of runts too but we attributed it to them being hatched from pullet eggs. Are we wrong? And thanks to Geebs and Pawtraitart for the help on the Birchen.

I am not sure but the one with the golden hackels looks like it may be expressing Wheaton. Anyone else have any comments? I'd sure like to get some feedback on that bird.

Thanks Chrissyr, you both make good points. We haven't seen any pecking problems yet, no feather loss or signs of blood. Noodeling this out it seems to me that since the losses have been on cold nights, zero degree or close to it, that the chicks that are in the comfort zone are sat upon by...

Thanks Ripster, our brooder is a room that measures six by eight feet. It is the second stage after the swimming pool brooder in the garage. The heat lamps are on one end of the room with short roosts on either side of the lights. The piling is in the corners near the lamps, we have been...

DW, (OkieQueenBee) has two 250 watt bulbs in there and they still pile up on each other. We had to raise them a bit when we saw a couple of them smoking I have added more roosting space and sealed up some of the drafts but at twelve weeks I thought that they would be feathered up well enough...

Zanna, in beekeeping there is what is known as 'The Golden Sting' that has put an end to many beekeepers passion, I hope you snip it in the bud with the desensitizing program. I went through a desensitizing program for my other allergies and it worked wonderfully, good luck with yours! Just...

We do a lot of bee removals from buildings and such and the allergic mantra is always the same. The fear of being stung in many people is equal to the fear of being shot with a handgun so they pull out the old allergic card so they aren't thought of as sissy's. One out of a hundred people...

That made me take a quick look at your location, we don't even think about getting nucs here until April. We place our orders this time of year and then wait and wait and wait.

Thank you for such a profound statement! As a newbee to chicken breeding this is a very welcome thought to keep in mind when viewing birds at shows. We bought a rooster who won ribbons, a very beautiful bird who is not perfect but still a good starter bird for our purposes. I am sure it will...

Thank you Donna, I think we can wait like you do if the chicks are going to be better quality. It won't hurt us to wait two or even three months if we get better results.

I was trying out my antique incubator last summer and put some pullet eggs in and the difference between them and the full sized eggs are quite noticeable. They are around eight weeks old now and the pullet hatchlings are about a third the size of the birds that were hatched from full sized...

That is something DW and I have been wondering. Pullet eggs are smaller, how long do you wait on a pullet before using her eggs to hatch? Not sure if you wait a certain age or for the eggs to become a certain size.

Yes we did, and I replied thanking you for the good read, sorry you missed it. It kind of affirms what I thought all along but what we have is not exactly what was in that article.

We did not discuss the worming, it didn't cross my mind and he did not ask. However I will say that the first bird to come down with it was before we wormed. Thank you, it is especially frustrating when you can not find out what to do in a situation, very helpless indeed.

Yes, I forgot to mention that we have decided to forgo the FF on all the young birds. DW is very careful to do the fermentation right but we have decided to raise the last batch for the year without any FF and see if that stops the problem. The three week olds will be going out to the brooder...

OK. We spoke to the Ks. State College of Vet Medicine, Dr. Daniel Shaw at the University of Missouri who specializes in poultry, and the Poultry Disease and Research Center at the University of Georgia. General conciseness was.... they don't know. But it MAY be, a type of Mareks called...

We were told that the pour on was not water soluble and the injectable was, it clearly looked to mix when I squirted it into the water... We had one chick that developed the problem before treatment and the rest after. The one that is showing symptoms today is here in the house, we are...
