Yikes! Do you hear when it's out there, or just find the coop torn up in the morning? Sounds like it might be time for sniper watch with a 22 or shotgun, lol. Whatever that is has got to be pretty strong, and DETERMINED
I guess we're blessed with two very loud (read- annoying barking and...
Well, over the past week I've taken each of the three hens that I didn't know which egg color they were laying and seperated them out into their own individual cages. All have laid EXCEPT the one who laid the "chocolate" egg in my avatar (banded blue), which means, she has not laid at all in...
Well, the only way I can figure to change the ratio is the theory people have of using the apple cider vinegar to change the PH of the chicken's system which would supposedly have them lay pullet eggs instead of cockerel eggs, but I have to do some more experimenting to see if it actually holds...
Please let me know what you find out! I'm by no means an expert, just some things I've been noticing and thinking, lol :D I'm not 100% sure on the sexlink stuff, but I think from what I've been reading you have to use barred hens with an unbarred, not blue or white rooster, since dominate...
Mornin' all
Loving the discussion on how to hatch pullets vs. cockrels, lol :D What I would LOVE to do would be to do a big experiment with something like 3 sportsman incubators one on normal temps, one on cooler temps, and one on the hotter temps, run each one with a batch of eggs from three...
Wow, we're back, lol! Boy was it quiet yesterday :D Was so frustrated the other day, went down the mornign after bringing the new babies home and three were dead I know the guy I bought 'em from had them all for over a week so it wasn't any issues from him, and too soon to catch anything wierd...

What a good idea! We raise banty cochins as well, such sweet little birds, never though to "use" them like that! May definitely have to try that.

I guess you never know! If I hadn't needed to move my wellies over to a less crowded cage first before throwing him in with them I would have never set him in there to begin with, figured he'd pick at them, but I guess you just never know, lol! I wonder if it helped him being raised by...

Yep, he sure is, lol Baby sitting roosters can be quite useful, lol! Maybe if we could convince all extra roosters to do that we could keep them all, lol

I probably can, I need to figure out which of the unmarked hens is a cottage hill laying the super dark egg, and which other three are the davis/jeane birds that lay so light I won't breed and then go from there. One of the jeane /davis birds is over melanized and solid black, the rest...
Ok, Chickie pictures There was one rooster that is already a month old who was broody raised, he threw in with the 9 chicks. All the chicks have nice shank feathering, and are just cute, what can you say, lol It was so cute, first couple of pics they'd been in a small box for an hour for...
Ok, we're back Babys are cute and sweet Here's some pictures of my roosters, need to get some more, but haven't had a lot of pretty days lately "Frank" seems bigger and I think he has a longer back, although I don't like the abruptness of the tail/back joint as well as my other one I'm...

Of course Will do it later tonight when the mob goes to sleep
yay! Where are you picking them up from? I've read about the cottage hill line, but never really seen a website or anything to see what the stock looks like when grown
Picking them up from Rancher's Poultry Farm aka...

I just sent it off to you. The GREAT thing about this recipe, BESIDES the fact that it is light and fluffly and rich, and delicious, IS that it uses 10 eggs to make.
IT makes TWO loaves of bread in one batch.
Oh, oh, me too, prreeeeetyyyyy please? I love making bread and am always...
Well, been a busy day, enjoying the warm and dry before the rain starts back up next week, still can't believe this is January! Got the bags of dirty litter moved out of the chicken house and all the lots scooted over to clean dry ground on top of all the normal "mommy" duties, feeding and...
Hi Everyone! Been awhile since I've posted, but I've been keeping up with the thread faithfully My two little boys don't leave me much posting time though! Anyways, George and Frank's harem has started to lay and I've been getting some marans eggs for about two months now. Mostly I think...
Mornin' everyone! Looks like lots of beautiful birds being posted!

Quick question, what does the turemic and cinnamon and fenugreek do? I love homeopathic stuff and am all up for healthier birds! Never heard of feeding that to chickens so am curious
chics in the sun, your chicks...

Ok, since you brought it up, I'm going to ask - I, too, am new to Marans. Mine are 9 and a half weeks now and HUGE. I've had leg troubles with a couple of them (a pullet that I culled at 3 weeks and now a cockerel with a hip that doesn't seem connected) so I'm wondering if I'm feeding...
Mornin' everyone! Now I'm caught up Been a crazy few days with teething on my youngest son and I haven't been on I'm ready for a happy boy, lol!
On the chicken front got the buff orps moved over this morning out of the in-law's chicken house to the outside run with the marans. They're...
