    Try the squirrelenator to catch them. We bait it with chicken scratch and it works well. We caught 3 today. I Had never thought to see I anyone would want them for food.

    The black copper marans have the darkest eggs. If you are looking for the dark chocolate colored eggs, those are your bird.

    I have two marans hens who are quite dependable as egg layers. They lay 5 eggs a week. The eggs are not as big as those from my barred rock or RIR, but are still respectable.

    Wahoo! First Marans egg. It is still a bit on the small side, but I feel good about the color. It is next to a large brown egg from my barred rock hen.

    I got my first marans egg over the weekend!! Wahoooo! It is a good color probably a 6-7 and quite petite. The hen that laid it was hatched at the end of March, so I was surprised that she laid an egg so soon. I feel like I have been waiting forever - but it was soo worth it. I am over the moon...

    What bad chickens - that is hilarious. I have heard that rooster semen can stay viable in a hen for up to 1 month. So I would think by Oct you would be good to go.

    I treated the whole crew for cocci 6 days ago as that was my first thought. I never saw any blood in the stool of her or anyone else. I will post in the sick section as well and see what suggestions people have over there. Thanks

    I just had 7 BCM hatch and one of them has a bum foot/leg. Anyone have any idea if there is anything that can be done or is this one to be culled? When it stands up it looks normal and can walk around just as well as the others, but upon laying down, the leg splays out sideways and the toes go...
