I know this is probably posted somewhere but I can't find it.....is there a standard to shoot for in regards to egg color? Specifically, speckles or no speckles? I get a variety and want to narrow things down to the ideal color.
Mine lay at around 23 weeks..............unless I'm especially looking forward to seeing the results of a particular pairing and then they wait until I give up looking.
The correct e allele for pure BTB is the same as for wheatens. BTB are not supposed to be e+/e+ so a bird that looks like a BTB out of a GSM pen is a crop out, not pure. Pure BTB are: eWh/eWh Mh/Mh Db/Db Di/Di. I'm only mentioning it because the BTB variety is widely misunderstood. It's...
I don't see any glaring issues in these photos. Your pullets have very heavy feathering on their shanks, though. Maybe check to make sure there isn't feathering on their middle toes. You could let them grow out a bit more and then post some conformation photos. Many folks in this thread have a...
I love my golden cuckoo marans. Mine are still in the project stage, but I'm happy with them so far. This is one of my 2013 pullets who just started to lay.
Yes. Mahogany males can help with the overall color balance of this breed. If he is proper in all other respects, he could be useful. At the very least he could be held back in reserve to be re-evaluated once you have a clear picture of what your flock issues are as a whole going forward into...
These are from two pullets that hatched December 22nd and they started laying a few weeks ago. I numbered/collected their first eggs for documentation. The first week I only got one egg out of each of them.
I'll be putting some pullets back onto their sire and will take my best cockeral over select G-1 (group 1) hens for next year. I will do the same thing with my G-2 birds to stabilize the traits I'm currently working on. I have a 5 year plan with this color variety.
I have to share! A few of my December hatch black tail buff pullets are starting to lay! Here's a full sun photo of their first eggs.
I'll be breeding the best offspring back to their parent to align the dark egg genes and build upon the other traits I'm trying to solidify. Fun project.
Breeding brother/sister is not the ideal way to move forward in a breeding program long term but it's extremely helpful when bringing in new birds. Brother/sister mating will quickly reveal the good, the bad, and the downright ugly super fast. At that point, one can make decisions on what needs...
If he is related to the pullets, chances are that they carry the potential for sprigs, so if you mate him to them you could end up with a sprig fest or at the very least, you would be moving the possibility forward into future generations. I'd find a rooster from a different line and hope the...
