Thanks!!
Sherman is a HOSS. I mean he is huge. Funny thing. Today my cousin picked up the Hamburgs and the EE that won't lay (and didn't pay for them! ) But when we pulled the hens from my dog crate to put into their carrier they, of course, put up a fuss. Sherman squawked as if to...
I've been gone from here for quite awhile. I've been busy being pregnant!!!
I'm back because two of my hens were lost to hawks. One BCM and one EE. I'm also selling the Hamburg pair and likely sending another EE to the freezer. So I'll be looking to buy 5 birds.
My Marans are all Wade line...
Well I had to give my dear Sherman an attitude adjustment yesterday! I shouldn't have told him that I thought he was the nicest and handsomest roo around. Little bugger bit me! I was shooing a hen and he reached out and bit me. I pulled his tail and growled at him. Then I carried him around and...
All these mean roos! I'll send you all Sherman sons when I have more than I want to eat! He has never looked at me mean. He takes great care of his ladies (unlike my Hamburg roo) is easy to herd and knows his name. He even runs up to me! I hold him often and now when I pick him up I don't have...
Funny chicken moments. First a bit of back story. The chicken coop is around 450 feet downhill from the house. There is a circular wooded area between them which is is surrounded by gravel drive. Sherman only just learned that big manly roosters won't be killed by walking on gravel.
Last week...
My blue hen began laying at 25 weeks. The other two are 24 weeks and Sherman has started trying to woo them. One girl's comb has doubled in size. I'm hoping for more little fart eggs very soon!
Well chicken herding here at Peregrine Hill Farm has gotten easier. Sherman knows his name! He RUNS to me when I call. I haven't coddled him for fear of making him aggressive and he isn't one to be petted and loved on but he knows that Mama calling = food. He and my blue EE hen have taken to...
So I'm sure it's my Blue girl who is laying as her pelvic points have widened and her comb seems to have gotten three times bigger. But DAMMIT if she doesn't have a side sprig.
Couldn't see it with her comb being so little, but now it's obvious. Her eggs are officially only for eating. I'll...
I GOT MY FIRST EGG!!
It was laying on the floor in the middle of the coop. It must have been laid by my blue copper hen as she's the oldest (24 weeks? I'd have to look). The color is seriously lacking, but that's ok. SHE LAID AN EGG!! It is little bitty. Smaller than my Hamburg hen's.

I am trying . . . . but I just stay keyed up and stressed out right now!
For mild stresses I like Rescue Remedy or a combination of (bach flowers) hornbeam, elm and mustard. For really heavy duty stress, a cup of Kava Kava tea will set you back to rights. It does impair though, so only...

According to the guy I bought my birds from there is a special punch for just that sort of thing and you do it the first day. The pattern of how many holes in their feet determine flock #? So that you don't inbreed?
I find it all very confusing and just say to myself "WOW! My...
Update on the BCM pullet with the white feathers. While taking these pics I remembered that one of my BCMs was injured a couple of months ago. She was a little lame on one leg and was a bit battered. This must have been that bird. I could have sworn she had NO white after juvie molt so that may...
